Share Our World: Wilson Arch hike

Wilson Arch

After exploring Looking Glass Rock we headed across highway 91 and went to Wilson Arch.

This hike (if you can call a 5 minute walk a hike) gets a 6/10.

2Time on trialThe hike is a .6 mile climb up the rock

It is located right off the highway. Some people stopped and took pictures of it from the parking area and others like our group hiked to the top. After going to Looking Glass Rock I wasn't as afraid for this hike.

The sign says

Wilson Arch was named after Joe Wilson a local pioneer who had a cabin nearby in Dry Valley. This formation is known as entrada sandstone. OVer time the superficial cracks, joints, and folds of these layers were saturated with water. Ice formed in the fissures, melted under extreme desert heat, and winds cleaned out the loose particles. A series of free standing fins remained. Wind and water attacked these fins until, in some, the cementing material gave way and chunks of rock tumbled out. Many damaged fins collapsed like the one to the right of Wilson Arch. Others, with the right degree of hardness survived despite their missing middles like Wilson Arch. It is against federal regulations to intentionally or wantonly destroy, deface or remove any natural feature or plant.

It is fascinating to learn how arches are formed.

Hole in Rock Store

10 miles from Wilson Arch on highway 191 is the Hole in the Rock store. If you are going to be going to Wilson Arch or Looking Glass Rock it is defiantly worth a visit.

It is a place full of unique artifacts and inventions. Here is a sample.

Three of us took a turn on this very comfortable marble chair

Alotofbull

The best was a art piece called Alotofbull by Lyle Nichols

Lyle created quite a few pieces at Hole in the Rock. This one is a bigger than life size bull made of scrap metal and tools like scissors, wrench, nuts and bolts.

It was so fun to look at a section and see what items you could recognize.

We had a great time hiking and exploring in this area just south of Moab in southern Utah.
