Amsterdam and SteemFest - a few of my thoughts

It’s a dull, dreary and dismal day here in Amsterdam and although the weather is miserable, we are not!

I’m so very excited for this SteemTrain we’re on. I’ve met a lot of absolutely wonderful people (I won’t start to name them because I’d be sure to miss someone out and I’d feel bad).

I’ve had a number of discussions with clever and insightful people and I’ve come to the conclusion that I want this to work – and so does everyone else I’ve spoken with.

I’ve also come to the conclusion that even without major influence from a great number of whales, there are enough of us to make a difference. Brilliant projects like Project Curie by @curie, The Daily Better by @better and The Daily Tribune: Most Undervalued Posts by @screenname to mention a few, prove that the community wants this to work and are willing to put their time and earnings, and sometimes their own money, toward making it work.

Do not get me wrong – I know there are many whales behind the scenes putting their time and efforts in too and I appreciate that, as do others I’ve spoken to.

I keep coming back to my point of people joining SteemIt simply because they think (thought) it was quick, easy money and who become disillusioned and disappointed when they’re not millionaires by the end of their first week. Very often it proves that SteemIt is NOT for them because it’s hard work – yes it is.

It really isn’t easy to come up with four posts a day which are interesting and engaging enough to earn money. I’m one of the fortunate ones, I not only have a back-catalogue of stories to share, I’m also able to write posts without major effort – again, don’t get me wrong, it is not easy.

But people like me and … (I’m still not going to name names) WILL make it because every day we post, our influence gains traction, our wallets get a little bigger and we GROW.

Pretty soon, we’ll be dolphins and sought out, followed and upvoted by the incoming newbies and with each SteemFest, meet, interaction we make the effort to attend, we gain ground. As whales leave, power down and check out, the money may not be as free-flowing, but as long as we’re still here, making this community work, the money will keep trickling – as it should.

OK, we no longer see posts that gain thousands of dollars, but that wasn’t sustainable in reality, was it? What IS sustainable is writing a blog, gaining a few dollars in upvotes and making this work.

As I said from the beginning – when I post on Facebook, Twitter and my own blog, I get nothing, zilch, nada, zero so why complain that posts don’t make more than a grand?

As the price of Steem drops, access to it becomes easier – if ONLY we could just buy Steem without going through cryptocurrency, EVERYONE would be able to get some… who knows, perhaps Steem would rise if the ‘great unwashed’ could get hold of it without the scary and sometimes complicated extra step of the crypto exchange.
