At what Point Does "I'm Only Milking the Steem Rewards Like Everyone Else" become Aiding, Abetting & Complicit In A Crime?

A 5 million dollar theft is taking place today on the steem blockchain - our old home. The visionary risk takers who have put time, intellectual capital and serious money on the table, along with their hearts, sweat and some tears, are being robbed.

The steem Hard Fork scheduled for today includes code that will transfer the steem balance from 64 accounts to one, private account - the owner of which has not been disclosed.

The total sum is approximately USD $5 million.

We may not know or connect with any of these people personally, but they are REAL PEOPLE. And they have been the risk takers who have created Hive, which we all happily use to create abundance.

Let me ask a little moral question via a story.

There is a physical robbery, in a bank branch, and it's your best friend's cash being stolen. The teller is on his knees, sweating at gunpoint, and the robber is clutching the bag of loot. Only one catch: the getaway car is in need of petrol. You are watching this play out from the relative safety of the gas station next door and are not personally at risk. If you KNOW all of this scenario is playing out, and you look the other way and fill up the car to get your $10 an hour to keep your job, are you complicit in the crime? Would you be less complicit if it's not your best friend's cash, but some rich guy down the street whom you barely know?

We engage on an open decentralized platform called Hive. Everything is transparent, if you know where and how to look. "I didn't know" is no longer an excuse.

We KNOW the people who built and fought for the Hive blockchain are about to be fleeced, big time.

Meanwhile, every day we VOTE on Hive, with rewards from a central Hive rewards pool that exists for the benefit of Hive and its contributing members. When I post my blog on Hive, I'm transacting a product, which earns me rewards. And creates wealth, for everyone. I empower not just myself, but the whole Hive ecosystem everytime I do that. Global community at its finest.

I want to ask an ethical question about Hive people being upvoted from the Hive reward pool who are also still actively engaging on Steem. If they're selling that same Hive post to steem, and getting steem rewards for that transaction which is ENABLING a corrupt steem ecosystem which is trying to destroy the leadership of Hive, is that the same as mindlessly filling up the gas on the bank robber's getaway car? They're not directly engaged in the theft itself, but as contributors and content suppliers to the current corrupt steem ecosystem, is it in Hive's (or my) interest to upvote them?

I'm wondering if we could collectively consider two things:

  • we already have @hivewatchers very helpfully leaving little orange question marks over Hive accounts that are known or suspected to be plagiarizers or spammers. So that I can CHOOSE to thoughtfully sidestep them and CHOOSE to use my upvote more wisely elsewhere. Could we ask @hivewatchers to leave a little blue questionmark over accounts which are still active on steem, and empowering the system which is currently engaged in major theft from the Hive leadership? Because I would like the informed choice to sidestep those accounts and give my upvote to people who are NOT empowering this criminal act which is subversive to ALL cryptocurrencies, not just Hive or Steem.

  • could we ask Communities to NOT include the active-on-steem accounts in their community votes? Because communities represent ALL PEOPLE ON HIVE and not all people may be comfortable with the enabling of this theft. Individuals would continue to be free agents and use their vote as they choose, but we'd all be informed.

I asked a lawyer friend yesterday if the guy pumping gas in to the get-away car would legally be considered to be aiding and abetting a crime. Her answer? Yes. Unless...

  • there was a threat to their personal safety (ie a gun held to their head)
  • they didn't know.

No one is threatening us personally (unless you're one of the 64) and yes, we all know.

Decentralized community does NOT mean tolerance of abuse or criminal activity. Everyone DOES get to make their own choice. No question about that. I'd like to ask the Hive community what it thinks about enabling each of us to use our vote more wisely to grow HIVE, and not to further empower the #steemhostiletakeover.

I look forward to your thoughtful responses and engagement. 😊

And no, LOL 😆🤣, I'm NOT expecting to win Miss Popularity for this post. And no, I don't give a fuck about that.

In closing, I'm reminded of an image I saw on a @3speak video by @lucylin yesterday: @lucylin/hllucdvp Watch it. 😆

Does yesterday's "Just following orders" bear any relation to today's "I'm just milking the steem rewards pool, like everyone else"?

We can certainly never claim, "We didn't know."
