Steeming it Forward in Wilmington, North Carolina

My wife and I are currently enjoying some much needed R&R in North Carolina through the early part of this upcoming Thanksgiving week. Today during the Wilmington Riverfest we met 37 year old Chris Register who is riding his touring bicycle rig across America and eventually through all 50 states.

We were walking the streets of historic downtown Wilmington, enjoying the sunny weather, when we stopped to check out this interesting Surly touring bicycle with a collection of flags streaming off the back. It was fully decked out with four touring panniers (two back and two front) and it was obvious that this was a long-distance touring rig.

Then, out of a nearby store, Chris appears and we strike up a conversation about his travels. Actually, I was just about to snap a photo of his bike, and I felt a little awkward when he just suddenly walked up to us. Chris explains that he is in the process of attempting to ride through all 50 US states with the goal of meeting and talking to many of America's interesting people. He is doing this to get a truer sense of the American story from actual people who are living it, as opposed to the often biased viewpoints we get from main-stream media. Chris is also using these adventures to write a book about his travels.

Here's an excerpt in Chris' words from a Chicago Tribune article entitled Lawyer takes to a bike and a mission to interview interesting people:

This is a way of pushing back against the media who dwell on conflict. I think we're looking to see that most of us worry about the same things, whether we call ourselves Democrat or Republican. If you listen to Fox News and MSNBC, you'd think America is split into two bitterly opposing camps. But what if you're a Republican who's concerned about global warming? What if you're a Democrat who doesn't believe in gay marriage?

Before parting ways, Chris handed me his business card which lists his website along with several other centralized social media sites where he cross-links his daily adventure blog.

This is when I felt compelled to mention Steemit.com. I proceeded to try and explain how he could sign up for a Steemit account and then also post his blogs there, with the potential to connect with an additional audience and also the possibility of getting paid for it. Chris thanked me for the info and said he'd look into Steemit.

I promised Chris that I would post a story about him in exchange for a few photos of him and his rig. Hopefully for Chris, it will lend creedence and legitimacy to Steemit.com. This Steemit post makes good on my promise. So, if you happen to see Chris Register on one of his cycling adventures, be sure to say hey and let him know that you heard about his story on Steemit.com.
