The Steem Blockchain requires a group of people to create blocks in order for the network to operate. This group of people run what is called Witness servers which run a consensus mechanism called DPOS or Delegated Proof of Stake.

Each of us as Steemit users can become a witness for the Steem blockchain. Each of us with a Steemit username, can cast 30 Votes in a selection process.

We have setup such a server and are running a campaign to get more witness votes. We are very active in the community specifically in Africa, where we hosted 2 Steem Saturday conferences in order to get the word about Steemit out to as many as possible people. The media did a few articles on these conferences which an in 2016 and 2017.

We have a team of developers which is currently working on a new blockchain project called SportsPodium. One of the aspects of the new platform, will be developed using SMT's and we hope to bring thousands of new users onto Steemit. This will happen as soon as the SMT platform is available for us to use.

Our current server

We have been running a server for the past month or so, but unfortunately missed a few blocks recently as the 32GB of RAM which we had in our server just did't cut it anymore. We are excited to say that we are already in the process of upgrading the server which should be done either later today or by latest tomorrow.

We will be installing a shiny new 6-core 8th gen Core i5 CPU
Larger SSD drives to accommodate the blockchain which is over 80GB
64GB of RAM and we should be future proof for the next while at least.

Our air-conditioned server room with its 10Mbps fibre Internet connection is more than sufficient at the moment - so that will stay as-is.
