Show your support for Steemit, make a #poweruppledge. I made a pledge in a recent post to power up all STEEM DOLLARS
earned from that post into STEEM POWER
, and have already started the process of doing that. Here's the original pledge:
Wasn't sure if anyone would really care or notice the pledge, but @tralwar did
I figured, if @tralwar liked the idea, maybe you will too!
While I understand that not everyone is in a position to be able to (or has a desire to) do this, I think if you are in a position to do it, then you should.
Side Note: I'm also in the process of powering up nearly 1,975.917 SD from my introduceyourself post (woo hoo).
You have questions, I have answers
Q: Why did you do this?
A: I wanted people to know that:
- Their valuable upvote was going to someone who is investing long-term into the system.
- I'm not here to make a quick buck and get the heck out.
- And, ... because I planned to do it anyway so why not let people know.
- I thought it would be fun to make a tag and 'protocol' around this so if people want to support fellow power-uppers, they can easily do that by looking for the hashtag.
- It seemed like fun, so there!
Q: What is Powering Up?
A: TL:DR - Powering up is taking the STEEM DOLLARS (SD) you earned from a post, and turning them into STEEM POWER (SP). See below for more detail on the whole process ocheck out this article from @easteagle13](@easteagle13/why-is-powering-up-your-steem-earnings-is-one-of-the-wisest-thing-you-can-do).
Q: What are STEEM DOLLARS, STEEM and STEEM POWER?
To make a long story short, STEEM DOLLARS, STEEM, AND STEEM POWER are like the "Holy Trinity" (I was raised Catholic so I get to say that) of currencies in the Steem ecosystem. STEEM DOLLARS (SD) are a token with a value which should be similar to ... dollars. STEEM is the 'native' currency of Steem, and STEEM POWER (SP) is a beast which gives you super voting powers on SteemIt, holds onto your money for two years and rewards, and you handsomely for letting it do so. There is a lot more to all of this - you can check out the whitepaper or have a look at posts from heroes like @donkeypong.
Q: Should I Do It?
A: As mentioned above, I don't think everyone should be expected to do this.
If you need the money, take the money - some of the reward is given in SD and some of it in SP, so you're getting SP either way.
Also, please do not make the pledge until you have read and understand this entire post. In fact you should probably go through the process of powering up a smaller amount first before you commit, so you understand what it really means.
If you're in it for the long run, want to show people your commitment, and want more god like powers on SteemIt ... you might as well power up!
Q: Where Did You Get That Crazy Amazing Image?
A: You mean the first image on this post that looks like @klye made it? I commissioned @klye to make art for this post, and you should too! He also made the wicked awesome #poweruppledge mushroom --->
<--- feel free to use it in your posts! Please hella upvote his verification comment below. By the way @klye - I've been calling you "@kyle" in past posts because I apparently can't read. Sorry about that :p
Q:How Do You Know People Who Pledge Will Actually Do It?
A: You don't, that's the fun part! But, seriously, this is where our community moderation comes in. If someone starts pledging to power up and doesn't, then people should start flagging their post, and the posts they promise to power up in the future. Also, you should probably not take the pledge that seriously if it's coming from someone who is brand new - they might not even really understand what it means.
OK, HOW Do I Do It?
First things first, you need a checklist. Everything needs a good checklist!
Step 1: Make a Rockin' Post, and Include the Plege
First of all, make your post awesome. Make it QUALITY. Otherwise, what's the point of pledging to power up your 0.000175? Include the tag #poweruppledge with your post. ONLY DO THIS if you plan to actually follow up - even (and especially) if your post makes a gajillion steem dollars! Then, include this at the end of your post (right before that love button y'all!).
**#poweruppledge: I pledge to power up every STEEM DOLLAR earned from this post to STEEM POWER ! [Join the #poweruppledge movement!](https://steemit.com/steemit/@nonlinearone/power-up-steemit-make-the-power-up-pledge-poweruppledge)!**
Step 2: Wait for the Payout
Step 3: Go to Your Author Rewards Page
You've waited in great anticipation and saw that huge number! Now it's time to see how much sweet sweet you earned from your hard work (you will have earned some in SD, some in SP and some will have gone to the curators - so it's critical to check how much of your earnings are actually SD). Make sure you are logged in and click on your profile image, then Wallet, then click 'Author Rewards' next to Wallet. Here's an example of what the page you end up should look like (from my recent post):
The "Author reward of $NNN.NN SD" amount on the line with the last part of the url of the post is the amount you need to write down or copy to the clipboard. In my case it was
Author reward of 137.424 SD and 66.499 STEEM POWER for nonlinearone/i-just-announced-steem-and-steemit-com-to-142-members-of-the-blockchain-meetup-in-phoenix-az (woo hoo!). So I copy-pasta-ed the 137.424 part.
Step 3: Choose How Much SD to Convert to STEEM
At this point you'll want to convert your earned Steem Dollars (SD) into STEEM. Note that once you've done this you aren't done (read on).
Step 4: Click Confirm
This is the scary part. Read what it says - it'll take one week to convert the STEEM DOLLARS into STEEM. The TL;DR on this is that if you do it this way, it's easier, probably safer, and you get an averaged price. If you'd rather do the conversion faster you can learn more about how to exchange your SD/STEEM on the markets. If you're following along you're probably about to soil the rug. All I can say is that SteemIt.com brought you these riches, and at this point it's time for the leap of faith to go down that long path to glory! If you'd rather use the market or an exchange at this point you can click cancel and do that - but remember you need to follow through if you made the pledge, or people won't trust you in the future.
Step 5: Where's My Money?
At this point, it looks like your billion dollars has disappeared and you're thinking: THE GOL DARN PLANE HAS CRASHED INTO THE MOUNTAIN!. Don't Panic. The blockchain has you covered. Head over to steemd.com/@yourusername to make sure the conversion request was processed.
That's a relief, isn't it?
Step 6: Wait One Week.
This is so the blockchain can perform black magic on your STEEM DOLLARS and turn them into STEEM
(which you will later power up into STEEM POWER
). As mentioned above, if you don't want to wait a week you can use the market (but I won't go into this here).
Step 7: Check How Much STEEM You Got From Your SD
Look in your wallet, or at the transactions shown on steemd.com/@yourname to find out how much you won, I mean received from the conversion. If you had 0 steem to begin with, then it's easy - it's the number of STEEM you have. For simplicity, let's assume this case and say it's 67 STEEM.
Step 8: Time to Power Up
that fresh STEEM
into STEEM POWER !
Step 9: Grab The Info About Your Power Up!
You can do this easily on steemd.com I'm going to use an example of a power up (also called a VEST) that I did before, so the number won't match the number in this example )but you get the idea). There should be a recent transaction on steemd with your VEST (Power Up), like this
Click the weird string of letters and numbers on the right. You should then get to a page sorta like this one:
Be not afraid of all of the scary incantations on this page! You only need to grab the url (pink highlighted thingy) for copy-pasta time in Step 10. For this example, I'll use https://steemd.com/tx/s0mel0ngcra3ystr1ng
as the transaction link.
Step 10: Tell Your Friends!
You didn't think it would be this hard, did you? But you made it! Now, it's time to tell all of your friends that you made good on your promise. Go to steemd.com/@yourname and find the recent transaction showing that you powered up. Go post a comment on your original post saying
#poweruppledge confirmation: I powered up all of the STEEM DOLLARS earned on this post into STEEM POWER! https://steemd.com/tx/s0mel0ngcra3ystr1ng
So, again, how exactly do I get started?
Remember to add the #poweruppledge tag to your post, and Copy-pasta this right at the end of your post (this text scrolls to the right):
