Is there long term earnings potential for posting good Steemit content?

It seems that currently a lot of the up-voting is happening on specific topics that the current user base is most interested in. As the site grows, I suspect that the interests of the community will expand. With the way that the Steemit payouts are structured, will posting content now that future users find interesting have payout? Or does historic content lose its ability to earn after time?
