Happy midweek mat monsters! No training for me today as I head out for the start of sailing season but nothing stopping me from going over the technique online to stay sharp.
As in other entries in this series, we are going beginning to end through the curriculum our academy and lineage uses to build a strong base from beginner to intermediate and beyond. Good for those curious about training, already training, or looking to begin instructing.
Today we sit in on the class dedicated to escaping the back control we went over the last 2 classes. Back can be scary if you don't have some escapes and techniques in mind.
Personal take-aways/opinions:
- Where is him? Old skool brazilian that translates to find the hips when you are in turtle. Good detail.
- Turtle technique So many times I see people turtle, freeze and stop working on escaping before your back is taken. Be mobile and threaten escapes from here too!
- Scrape! Good to keep in mind when you are all constricted up and struggling because every inch scraped is an inch closer to escape. You hear Ryan coaching with SCRAPE! SCRAPE! at so many of the competition matches.
- Back on face! I had never seen the back on face technique (or lack thereof) Probably not a good go-to but another variation to keep your opponent guessing.
