WHite Belt BJJ Curriculum - Basic Judo Throw for Stand-up

white-belt curriculum1.jpg

Today is a bit of a special day for our BJJ family as we had an awesome Nogi class this morning focusing upon the arm triangle (standard, from the arm drag, escapes and a counter to the escape) and there is a baby shower for Ryan and his wife! So excited to see their young family grow and another new white-belt in the world.

Small class but look at these killers. We are doing our best Helio pose from the picture on the wall.

For today's white belt class, we follow on the stand-up grip fighting from earlier in the week, and add in a large outer reap which is the english translation for Osoto Gari.

Personal opinion and take-aways:

  • I LOVE that there is self-defence, wrestling and judo built into our curriculum which is very traditional and old skool otherwise.
  • I have strangely good balance for a lanky white guy and really like the hopping to take inches away and get them into a position where a throw requires less exertion.
  • When you see that switch from the osoto gari to the foot sweep in full speed in competition the crowd goes WHOOOOAAAAAA and it is a beautiful thing.

I am wondering if you are a BJJ practitioner or a follower of my other columns and what your thoughts are about my BJJ one either way. Lemme know!
