Welcome back to @joyrobinson new series. This time we’re goong to know more about the world of rice. Yes, that’s right!
Rice is the most consumed food crop worldwide most specially in Asia. It feeds two thirds of the world’s population and has been feeding mankind for more than 5,000 years!
The word “rice” derives from the French word ”ris” which comes from Italian word ”riso” and was first used in English in the 13th century.
Rice Biology & Anatomy
Rice is a grain and part of the grass family. It’s a self-polinating species and doesn’t require any insects. The grain is a whole seed of the plant that was grown, harvested and consume.
With a long slender leaves, a rice plant can grow from 1 to 1.8 m or 3.3 to 5.9 ft. tall depending on the variety.
The edible seed or grain can measure from 5 to 12 mm or 0.20 to 0.47 in long and the thickness from 2–3 mm.
Rice hulls or husk are the outer covering that encloses the rice kernel while growing.
Hulls are inedible but can be burn to use as a fiel for power plants or rice mills.
