Hazel read the whole entry and understood at last, what had become of the lovers. She also realised that it cleared up perhaps more than one case on the Police’s books – that of ‘The Body in the Trunk’ and perhaps even of the dismembered arm which was discovered floating in the Thames.
Hazel knew then that she had recognised the severed head in the jar they had found. That was Almyra’s final remains.
Hazel could see from the rambling fashion that the journal had begun to be written in that the author of this journal was beginning to show signs of the kind of madness that can overtake those known as Throwback.
His writing was becoming disjointed and the style was changing from one date to the next and even skewing backwards in the time-line to re-live events that he had already. Toward the end of the journal’s entries, the style was changing even on the same line. It would appear that if Jack had still been practicing at the hospital at the times of these entries, he would have been noticed and admitted to one of the insane asylums.
