I don't speak Dutch very well, but I on my travels I picked up on some words and expressions.
I find it very useful to learn a little of the local language before I arrive.
Saying Please and Thank you correctly, can go a long way.
Please note that I have learned most of my Dutch from the print on cigarette boxes, from setting my navigation system to Dutch and in bars and pubs.
You can always fill up with english words, most people will understand, especially in Amsterdam.
