Chinese influences in Thailand
As a lot of you may know or may not.. In Thailand, we have a lot of Chinese influences here. As long time ago, a lot of Chinese migrated here to the country.. including my ancestors :) I don't really know who they were really, the highest generation I had known and talked to was my great grandma. I don't even think she could speak normally when I started to remember things.
Yes, I have a bit of Chinese blood right here. So my dad's generation has a bit more in them. I remember, since I was a kid, they all loved to watch Chinese T.V. series that somehow we have them re-run quite a lot here in Thailand. One of my favs and yes, the classic one was..
Justice Pao or Bao Zheng (包青天 : เปาบุ้นจิ้น)
The show started in Thailand when I was 4 years old and re-run and re-run till I got to high school, I think. LOLOL. Long time, huh?
Bao Zheng - Bao Zheng, commonly known as Bao Gong, was a government officer during the reign of Emperor Renzong in China's Song Dynasty.
This area in Bangkok, 'Talat Noi' is also one of the areas with Chinese community has been living in. We walked around the area and it was truly Chinese vibes I could tell. A lot of red color around with the Chinese characters as well.
So Heng Tai
When in Talat Noi, one place you wouldn't want to miss (At least, that's what the other reviewers say) is this Old style Chinese house that's been there for generations called ' So Hen Tai '. There we went and let's see what's good..
First of all, I was so loving the entrance as really, not many houses in Thailand would have that style of painting or decoration. It's truly Chinese..

Right after you walk in, you will find this swimming pool where they use to teach a diving course. Oh! So it's somehow a diving center as well? I would say so.. The swimming pool surrounded with the houses itself where the family still live in.
People come here a lot mostly to see the typical Chinese house as they really keep it the way it used to be. The broken red doors with Chinese characters on them. The red wall with the photos of The King rama 9 and the Queen Sirikit and the top of the white wall has such a beautiful and colorful Chinese style painting.

So Heng Tai Cafe
Besides the small diving center they have going on, there's also a small cafe' offers a few types of drink with an ok price. They also make themselves clear by stating at the main entrance that 'To visit and look around their house, you need to purchase some drinks at least on drink per person..' which is understandable, I guess.
My final thought for So Heng Tai : I do think it's a cool place to come check it out and see if you're interested at all in how people used to live in the past or how the place's designed. Though, I wouldn't be back so often as really, the place woulnd't change in the next decade for sure. The drink was ok and I wouldn't say it's the most reasonable priced ones you could find in Bangkok either. 1 time is totally enough for me for a long while.
