What is TARC?
Tazewell ARC, @tarc, is a nonprofit organization based out of Tazewell County, Southwest Virginia. They are a no kill shelter that is striving to make a difference by helping as many animals as they can.
This is their mission statement taken from their website:
Tazewell ARC is a 501c3 animal rescue in Southwest Virginia. Our goal is to save as many dogs as we can from the high kill climate of Deep Appalachia, and to fight for their right to live free of pain, sickness, fear, hunger, thirst, and cruelty. We focus on transport over adoption and have rescue partners in New England states who, together with our tireless volunteers on the ground in Virginia, work to save hundreds of dogs every year. We place a strong emphasis on spay and neuter and believe it is the solution not only to pet overpopulation, but the disregard for life that goes along with it. We’re striving to provide low-cost spay/neuter options for our community in hopes of reducing stray populations and municipal shelter intake.
Who runs TARC?
@rhondak is the huge heart behind TARC, but she cannot take do this alone. We need help from everyone here on the platform to support her in her efforts to save these animals. Running a shelter is not cheap and and she can have anywhere between 35-40 animals at a time. Here is a breakdown of the expenses:
Typical overhead for this organization is minimal. We do have a private facility, though the rescue is considered “home-based” under Virginia law, rather than a shelter. Recurring monthly expenses run about $200. (This is a combination of electric, water, dedicated phone and internet service.) Food for the dogs runs about $300 per month. Part time kennel help (who has agreed to receive payment in SBD) is $360 per month. Veterinary costs are best calculated per dog. The average cost to vet a dog for adoption or transport across state lines is $300 per animal. While these are not the only expenses we incur, it’s safe to say that for approximately $850 per month, we could keep the doors of this rescue open indefinitely.
