The Little Voice - Working on a Word

I don’t know why but I decided this week’s word of the week, for the Monday night show, ‘Drop In the Ocean’, on the #buddyup channel over in Discord, needed some work doing to it.

It needed me to look at it closely, from far away, below it, above it, you get the idea, it basically requires me to take my time and look at it from every angle. It also needs me to step into it and wear it. Like I do every day, regardless of whether I’ve chosen to write about it.

Yesterday, I looked at it through my Britishness and decided this meant I should wear a corset. Not literally, no, I wouldn’t go that far! But metaphorically, by writing with the strict form of the Shakespearean sonnet. How more British can you get than Shakespeare? I’m not going to say it was easy, or that what I produced was in any way good, you can judge that for yourself and bring your own viewpoint to the mix.

But it is fun to challenge my brain in this way. To stretch myself out in the pursuit of understanding the depth of a word. And realise that my own little voice is but a #dropintheocean. So, now let me introduce you to my attempt at wearing a corset, and you can judge for yourselves whether I was able to breathe. 😊

Stiff upper lip ain’t me, wanna know why?
I’m the type of Brit that likes to chat loud,
Be expressive, let my emotions fly.
For that, I don’t need me no bowler hat.
Being reserved, uptight and prim won’t work
This view that all Brits are is just plain wrong!
It really isn’t some strange British quirk.
Some of us will gad about all day long!
That’s the main problem with stereotypes,
They just can’t be trusted to shed a light
On people that wear classical pinstripes
tote umbrellas, speak posh and look up-tight!
Uniforms, constraints, a way to behave
Forget it all, you can't take it to the grave!
