I'm a putz. A complete and utter putz. I do this cool thing (at least I thought it was) and drop a contest in my interview and then sit on my ass for a week. Non-fiction can sometimes be intimidating and it usually involves a fair amount of effort, researching and fact-checking. I apologize to the contestants. I received three entries for the contest.
Without further ado, the winner of the three is @jayna with her Nine Elven entry.
Her piece brought back many memories of the time. It was also very true to the time for me having felt the uncertainty of how to deal with the children around it. I had a five-year-old and a toddler at the time. What do you tell them? Do you protect them from the images, the news? How?
I think that @jayna did well to connect with the reader and leveraged a recent historical event that many have feelings and connections with. That's not to say that the others did not. @britlib16's piece had many of the elements I was looking for as well. It's hard to figure out what is going to resonate with the audience or reader.
I would say that @britlib16's piece Jesus Is Nailed To A Cross was a close second for me. The thing that I pushed it down was the dialogue. In my opinion, (and it's just that) dialogue in historical fiction should try to keep within the period of the piece. The piece was situated in late B.C./Early A.D. period. I was with the piece up to the last third where the modern dialogue came in.
They threw me out PDQ and start their grizzly task.
This is the same thing for me when watching a historical fiction movie. You need to be careful of inserting modern language acronyms, sayings or terminology.
The last entry was from @mishegas called “Trump & The True Epectasy of St. Gregory of Nyssa - The Journey Begins”
