Widely known for its beautiful song the nightingale is a summer visitor arriving in April and leaving in late September.

It is a shy and inconspicuous bird with a dull brown plummage which lightens on the underside.
Both sexes are alike in plummage and markings. The song which is remarkable at night is loud, full of deep notes and with an extensive run of trills and warbles. The nightingale is also made most famous by the TV series Twin Peaks.
Haunts
Copses, thickets and the edges of woodland.
Food
Insects and their larvae, occasionally berries.
Nest
Made of grasses, roots and dead leaves. Located on the ground or slightly up in low bushes, shrubs or young trees.
Eggs
Three to six eggs of a pale olive shade, with overtones which range from blue to brown. Laid in May or June.
