TripFM #68: The Achilleion Palace, Corfu Island, Greece, 2014 (21 pics)

Ten kilometers from the city of Kerkyra, in the settlement of Gastouri, is one of the most significant architectural sites in the island of Corfu - the Palace of Achilleion.

The Palace complex was built in the late 19th century by the Empress Elizabeth of Austria, the wife of the Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. The Empress Elizabeth of Austria, also known as Princess Sisi, was fascinated by ancient Greek mythology and dedicated her Palace to Achilles decorating the territory of the complex with statues of gods and heroes of Ancient Greece.

I'd like to show you some photos from our trip to the Achilleion Palace.

The main staircase of the Palace.

Nowadays, Achilleon is a huge Museum, for the restoration of the interiors of which were purchased many household items and furniture of the 19th century.

The Palace is surrounded by a large number of statues.

Statues of Achilles.

The vast area around Achilleion is reserved for the garden. Here you can walk for hours, enjoying the magnificent views of the island of Corfu and the Ionian sea.

Thank you for travelling with me. :)
