Wasilla Alaska is a city nestled in the arms of two lakes. Wasilla’s temperatures are similar to Anchorage, making it an easy place to live. Wasilla is the place to have a garden, and produce grown in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley are known to be extremely large. The rich soil and the long hours of summer sunlight help produce amazing vegetables. Nothing tastes better than Wasilla pumpkins in the fall. Growers in the area take premium honors at the state fair each year. On Wednesday morning, by the Museum, there is a farmer’s market.
Wasilla is the starting point of the Itenorod Race. This is the largest sled dog race in North America. Come watch the races and understand the historic nature of the event. Meet the mushers that mush these fantastic dogs through the most rugged terrain of the far north. You might even meet racing icon, George Attla. This 81 year old Alaskan native has a racing record that spans over 5 decades. If you ever got to watch him race, you were honored to see a race you will never forget.
Wasilla is the home of one of the most complete history museums in the state. Those who love history will love to explore the mining history of the region. The Dorothy G. Page Museum can keep you spell bound for several hours. There you will find much of the rich history of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Another nice summer trip is the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry or pay a visit to Independence Mine, in Hatcher Pass. It is a 20-30 minutes drive in the summer, and if you have never been there, it is a must see.
Wasilla is a vibrate city with a complete variety of quaint shops and big box stores. There are fantastic restaurants. Caribou sausage and wild salmon are some of the delicacies you might find on the menu. There are many fine places of fine dining and complete hotel accommodations.
