The Hang Nga Guesthouse is more commonly known as the Crazy House. Vietnamese architect Dang Viet Nga designed and build this incredible building, opening its doors in 1990. Hang Nga is the Chinese Moon Goddess it is named in her honour. It resembles a tree stretching to the sky, but the design also features other elements. Animals, mushrooms, spider’s webs and caves are all incorporated.
The architect was inspired by the great Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi, who of course designed the famous Familia Sagrada Cathedral in Barcelona; the parallels do not go unnoticed. Other comparisons have been made to designs by Walt Disney and Salvador Dali. It has become a very popular attraction in Dalat and the Chinese People’s Daily acknowledged it as in the top 10 of the most bizarre buildings in the World.
Nga worked in an unconventional way, not using blueprints. She created paintings of what the final build should look like. These were then transformed by local craftsmen and women. This means that the end result resembles something more organic than structural. The five-storey building is truly unique, like something from a fairy story.
