In China, Singles Day is a sort of weird phenomenon that is both like and unlike something that you do see in the west. It's kind of like a reverse Valentines Day where people celebrate being single. The selection of this day is obvious, as 11/11 is all ones. That, however, has changed over the past many years. While I still hear some of my Chinese friends refer to it in that context, the meaning has shifted to one of rampant commerce. China doesn't have Black Friday, but 11/11 is basically Cyber Monday. Online vendors like Taobao and TMall drastically slash prices, and the whole country goes crazy with pointing, clicking, and buying. If you are a package delivery guy, that means November 12 is likely the worst working day of the year.
These scenes were taken outside the north gate of my university, and it's fairly common across Changzhou right now.
