Sometimes I want to get away from technology for a while, lounge by the beach, and sip on a cocktail. Other times I'll want to get away from the hustle and bustle and just enjoy nature, be it hiking, camping, or paddleboarding.
However, Amsterdam isn't going to be that kind of vacation for us. Over the course of a week, we'll immerse ourselves in a new culture, experience the city, and let technology help us do so efficiently. Here are a few useful apps to help you get the most out of your travels.
Google Translate
If going somewhere you don't speak the language; a translation app is quite useful. There are some great language learning apps like Duolingo, but I think Google Translate is a much better option for traveling.
My favorite feature of this app is you can hold your camera up to text, and it will translate that text for you.
It's not perfect because it gives literal translations. If you've studied multiple languages, you know things are said various ways in different languages. Nonetheless, it is incredibly helpful if you don't speak/read the local language.
The features don't stop there, though. No internet connection? No problem!
Instant translation.
Two-way speech translation.

Citymapper
Citymapper is far superior to Google Maps and the like. This urban transportation app will be a huge help when trying to get around. It's only available in select places around the world, but the Randstad region is one of them (Amsterdam is in the Randstad region).
With many different forms of transportation, you can easily figure out the best way to get from point A to B. Featuring Uber integration as well as bike routes and live bike share information.
Lounge Buddy
Tired of sitting in airports for hours in uncomfortable chairs? Consider using a lounge. Often times, food and drinks are included with the price of admission. If you have any long layovers, you should download Lounge Buddy. The app provides pre-negotiated rates for airport lounges across the world.
My favorite part of this app is the ability to enter the credit cards you carry, lounge memberships, airline elite statuses, and military status. If any of these things give you free or discounted access to an airport lounge, the app will let you know.
You can also add your flight itinerary, so the app knows what airports you'll be at. Read reviews for the lounges in each airport, see the prices, photos, and amenities.
Pro Tip - Use code APPSTORE for $10 off your first lounge through Lounge Buddy, OR get your 30-day free trial of Tripit Pro and receive a $25 OFF code for Lounge Buddy.
If you find these useful, please let me know. I have some more to share if you're interested!
