Today I'd like to take you back in time by visiting a part of the Astra Museum situated in Sibiu, Romania, where you can see traditional folk habitats, houses, churches, different mills, carriages and vehicles etc.
This is an old wooden church with shingles which probably dates back to the 19th century but it might be older. The roof of the house indicates that it is from a mountain area where heavy snowing might have been present back in those days. This type of roof makes the snow slide down. A roof made of shingles can't support too much snow and at some parts of Romania winter can be tough.
This is a small church probably from a remote area. Access for visitors was denied to preserve the interior decorations.
That wooden cross is handmade, hand carved and look at those brooms. Have you ever seen such brooms?
Another house made of wood and pise. Beneath the house there was usually a storing space for food and not only. You can see the small door, the entrance.
Another small house, a little bit different from the other, also made of wood and covered with shingles. The wall facing the street is painted with whitewash. The fence is also made of wood and put together using branches.
During the time of my visit the museum was hosting a series of events, workshops dedicated to disabled people.
As you can see, those masks displayed on the fence are handmade traditional masks used during folk festivals.
This is the first part of my series. Stay tuned for the next part.
