There is something vaguely soothing about drawing buildings and filling them up with different hatches. Call it a side-effect of having been in architecture school but even when I doodle, the first thing that flows out of my hand is a building.
Some years ago, I stumbled across the work of Kyle Henderson who does incredible abstract city drawings. As his work is in black and white, uses sharp angles and features cities, I was immediately taken. In an effort to understand how he did it, I replicated one of his drawings.
Later, I went on to make my own of the different cities that I visited but I'd completely forgotten about the first one. I'd given it to my sister when she left to university. I'm visiting her now in Bangalore where she's put the picture up with another of my drawings and some of hers.
Obviously, she's much better at colour than I am. It was a nice surprise to rediscover this. Got to go back home and find my other city mashups. And make some new ones.
