A step towards fairness

Witnesses have been complaining for a while that the official Steemit Witnesses page is not fair. If you head there you will notice it displays 50 witnesses. Anyone new to the platform would think there are only 50 witnesses (node servers) supporting the Steem blockchain, which is totally wrong. We currently have 136 active witnesses, according to @drakos' own witnesses page. @beerbot is #136 active witness but the system also take into account dead (inactive) witnesses making him/her the number 230. So that means, at this current time, there are 87 active witnesses missing from the official Steemit Witnesses page. Witnesses in the top50 are being exposed to the world and to all organic witness votes, all the other 87 are in the shadow.

Back in April 2017, there was a request to show the complete list on the official Steemit Witnesses page but the request had been rejected and the issue closed at the end of April. Recently, @noisy.witness (@noisy, @perdua & @jblew) has made it to the top50 in just two months (what an amazing feat!) and instantly noticed a surge in witness upvote due to an exposure on the public frontend. @noisy requested reopening of the case and gave more information on the issue. You can check @noisy comment on this GitHub issue. A discussion followed between some fellow witnesses (including @sircork, @enginewitty, @nnnarvaez) and myself. Finally, @roadscape re-opened the issue and accepted the following pull requests:

What does this mean?

Accepting the two pull requests above means that at next release the official Steemit Witnesses page will be showing 100 top witnesses instead of only 50 (I will still be out of view due to being at rank #129, that includes dead witnesses in front of me). That page will also grey out inactive witnesses and show how long they have been inactive for:

This is a first step, I hope we will be able to get more update done and get to reach a fairer to display the full list of witnesses. It was argued that below #100 there were too many dead witnesses hence the decision to only show the top 100. But I believe there are frontend strategies that can be put in place, such as a filter button allowing the end user to hide inactive witnesses making place to show more active ones.

Làm nhân chứng cho Steem, quan trọng là có người bầu cho mình để mình lên hạng, hạng càng cao thì càng có cơ hội tạo block cho cái blockchain và được hưởng Steem Power. Với Steem Power đó mình có thể trả tiền cho máy chủ mình thuê để làm việc nhân chứng, nếu còn dư thì một phần của nó có thể dùng để làm những dự án giúp cộng đồng.

Hiện nay cái danh sách nhân chứng Steem có hai vấn để quan trọng:

danh sách chỉ hiển thị chỉ có 50 nhân chứng hạng đầu thôi, trong khi đang có 136 nhân chứng vẫn hoạt động. Nó rất bất lợi cho nhân chứng từ hạng 51 đi xuống vì đâu ai biết là có những người đó đâu. Thế là 50 nhân chững đầu tiên sẽ được quản cáo miễn phí trong khi nhân chứng phía dưới phải tìm đủ thứ cách để cho người ta để ý đến mình.
danh sách hiẻn thị nhân chứng còn hoạt động và nhân chứng không còn hoạt động (gọi là nhân chứng chết vì họ bỏ cuộc và không còn tạo block cho blockchain). Đây cũng là vấn để vì những ai không biết sẽ vấn có thể bầu cho nhân chứng chết, thế là phí một phiếu bầu mà có thể đưa cho một nhân chứng mới.

Từ tháng 4 năm 2017, nhân chứng Steem có than với cồng ty Steemit Inc rằng danh sách như thế không có công bằng chút nào. 50 nhân chứng đầu đã nhận được nhiều phiếu bầu rồi, nhưng bây giờ lại được có tên tren danh sách nhưng danh sách lại không hiển thị tất cả nhân chứng thì sao nhân chứng mới bắt đầu hoạt động có thể cạnh tranh được?

Mới cách đây vài hôm (có nghĩa là đã hơn 1 năm rồi) Steemit Inc mới đồng ý thay đổi cái trang danh sách nhân chứng theo cách sau:

danh sách sẽ hiển thị 100 nhân chứng đẩu tiên.
danh sách sẽ vẫn còn hiển thị nhân chứng chết, nhưng tên họ sẽ bi gạch ngang và sẽ hiển thị họ không còn hoạt đổng từ khi nào

Nhưng đấy vấn chưa phải là công bằng. Hiện này có 136 người nhân chứng còn hoạt động, nhưng nhân chứng số 136 hiện tại đang đứng hạng 230 vì có 94 nhân chứng chết ở phía trước mình. Thế là nhân chứng đấy sẽ gặp nhiều khó khăn vì sẽ không ai biết đến mình.

Quôc-Huy hiện nay đàng là nhân chứng hoạt động số 111 và đang đứng hạng 131. Có nghĩa là tên mình sẽ vẫn không có trong danh sách vì có 20 nhân chứng chêt trước mình.

Đây là một thay đổi tốt dù nó chỉ là một bước nhỏ, nhân chứng chúng tôi hy vọng là sẽ còn nhiều sự thay đổi như vậy và một ngày nào đó danh sách sẽ công bằng hơn
