TEOTWAWKI (An Original Novel - Episode 84)

The Ryujin is Pleased

I gave the Ryujin a call. I was surprised that she answered the phone herself instead of having one of her flunkies do it. “Your order is complete” I told her. “I think that you’ll be pleased.”

“Very well” she said.

Once again the Ryujin and her crew paid me a visit. They all gathered in the showroom. For a change, it wasn’t raining as much although it was very foggy. The showroom interior was very different from the last time she had been there. The lighting was subdued and it was foggy inside too. I was wearing a long western duster type coat, apparently riding a mono-wheel. I bowed in greeting in the Oriental fashion.

“Welcome” I said. “As you can see there have been some changes made. We’ve moved to a higher level so to speak. There are no more individual models, no drones either, I only have one product. I don’t think you will mind the change and you are already wearing most of it.”

I presented the Ryujin, Sally and the two Ogres with a small ovoid each. “I call those Dragon Tears”

I held one in hand to show them “If you would care to be seated please?”

I waved my hand and a recliner appeared out of nowhere behind each one of them. They were all somewhat startled but they sat down.

“This little bauble, is mostly storage” I said.

I held another dragon tear as an example and indicated the absolutely stunning teardrop shaped gem attached to the chain. “You’re wearing the controller, the neuro loop around your neck.”

“It’s beautiful.” The Ryujin and Sally examined their own translucent crystals, there were whole constellations of tiny moving lights in the depths. It was almost hypnotic.

“It is pretty isn’t it? “I said, “It's made out of zillions of tiny motes, or smoke- lets no bigger than a human cell.

Structural Smoke-let

In freeform, in massive amounts, it resembles fog or smoke so I call it I call it 'Structural Smoke.’ ”

I paused in case anyone wanted to ask a question. Apparently not. The elderly lady and the young girl were both gazing into the depths of their gemstones like cats looking at birds. Diamonds are a girls best friend I suppose. They were mesmerized. The men seemed a little bored.

“Ahem.” I coughed discretely. The women ripped their gaze away from their stones, sat upright, almost at attention, and paid heed to me once more. They seemed a mite embarrassed.

“As I said, that trinket is storage. It’s pure Structural Smoke. Your neuro loop controls it. Structural Smoke and what I was doing earlier are alike in the same way that a toy paper glider is like an F-16 fighter jet. They both fly and that’s about it. Ssmoke is that much more sophisticated.”

The two women stared at me and blinked. The men straightened up and paid closer attention. I continued, “See the menu?”

A virtual window appeared in the air before them.

“Typical menu,” I said, “nested items. We’ll start with an Avatar. You’ll notice that there is a lot of Structural Smoke in the air in the room? It looks like fog. I’ll use it for the demo. After you leave here, other than what you take with you, you’ll have to provide your own Structural Smoke. Don’t worry. It’s not hard.”

I selected a menu item. Then I produced a small spherical object from my shirt pocket, something like a seed diamond, and tossed it into the air. It hovered for a moment then a tiny whirlpool of light formed around it. The whirlpool coalesced into a small dragon. Hovering like a humming bird.

“The seed that I tossed into the air was the core” I told them. “the SSmoke in the air formed around it to make everything else.”

“You both know my sidekick Elvira?” I asked them “This is the same thing. It took me a week to make my Elvira Avatar. This method is much faster don’t you think? “

The dragon hovered in the air and bowed.

“The little gal is beside herself with happiness to see you” I said. The small, hovering dragon fissioned into two identical copies of itself. They hovered beside themselves.

“And again.” I said, and then there were four.

“OK, POV change. You can see what the Avatars see on the screen there?” he asked, nodding toward virtual screen.

They could, they all nodded.

“Ta dah! Now you can see from your own eyes what the avatar is seeing, no screen needed.” I said.

The screen vanished. They all gasped in unison as their point of view shifted, they now felt that they were little dragons, one each.

“Now you are the dragon, virtually. That’s why I wanted you to be seated” he said. “You could have fallen just now. The transition is disorienting. But wait! It gets even better, you can fly! You control the dragon with your mind!”

They all felt an indefinable urge to flap wings that they hadn’t realized that they had. They succumbed to the urge and did so, somehow. They could fly! They felt like they were flying. The four little dragons darted around the room like humming birds for a few minutes, chasing and frolicking with each other. One dragon was controlled by Sally, another by the Ryujin. The other two were controlled by Marc and Captain. Sally was giggling with delight and the men were chuckling. Even the normally inscrutable Ryujin was grinning from ear to ear.

“Fun huh?” I asked.

“You don’t have to restrict yourself to just a little dragon either. If you have enough Structural Smoke you can do damn near anything. That brings up the next subject” I stated.

“Where to get the Structural Smoke? I have this room stocked. Overstocked actually, that’s why it looks foggy. The dragon tear is solid smoke, solid Structural Smoke that is. Enough for a drone like that dragon. To do bigger things, you need more smoke.” I told them.

“The little Dragons eat anything, and I do mean anything, and turn the any carbon it contains into Structural Smoke. That’s one reason the avatars need a core, for specialitys operations that Structural Smoke can’t do. SSmoke cannot replicate but the Core contains a small Smoke Forge. For ease of handling they condense it internally then lay dragon’s eggs, which are pure SSmoke. The size of the egg is proportionate to the size of the Dragon, just like birds. This little guy is about the size of a Robin so it’ll lay Robin Egg size Dragon Eggs.

The Ryujin raised an eyebrow and looked at me.

“I know, I know, “ I said and removed my coat. I wasn’t balanced on a unicycle. From my hips down there was a small cyclone, somewhat like a genie from a bottle. I was riding a white tornado.

“This is better than anything.” I said. I drifted across the room and back. “I like it better than when I had legs. Don’t be getting the idea that you have to be legless to use it, either. Quite the contrary. You can put a seat on it and foot-pegs if you have legs, and ride it like a motorcycle...or you can fly like superman(in an SSmoke dense environment.). I like it But there’s so much more.”

“There are MANY options.” I said dramatically. “In fact there are a bucket load. SSmoke can be made to do, literally do, anything you can dream up. If you feel the need for enhanced protection, it can provide a cover that’s bullet proof. If you want to stay dry, it’s water proof. If you need to go potty, it can solve that problem too.”

“Of course,” I conceded, “if you really want a dragon. It can be one of those too.”

The whirlwind morphed into a dragon. I was riding a Dragon.

“Or..it can be a pony, unicorn, Velociraptor, or Kangaroo. It can be anything you want it to be,” I finished, “as long as you have enough Structural Smoke.”

“How clever” the Ryujin was pleased. “You did not disappoint. Thank you very much. This is most excellent.”
