Graduation was a year ago and getting a job wasn't easy. After a lot of rejections from interviews, I took on all kinds of menial job to pay the bills. I stopped dreaming about my well planned future, vaporized in the face of hustling to make ends meet.
Now, strap in and let's take a ride of the day things changed.
Finally, there was a glitter of hope. An old friend connection. I got an interview with a top tech company. I had a recollection of all my old interviews and how they all went awry. I felt this was my final chance and if I didn't get it this time around.... Then I wouldn't bother trying anymore.
So I started preparing, nothing was going to mess this for me.
You know, everyday we make plans for the day. But, we do forget one thing ; the universe is also making a plan for you.
I woke up that morning feeling bright. I was positive about this one. I took the whole week to prepare. My suit was ironed with details. I checked my briefcase thrice , just to make sure I had everything. (Paranoia was already setting in so I read myself some positivity mantras.)
Going out to take charge of my life, I said, triumphantly.
I was waiting at the bus stop for my bus. I left for my interview an hour, twenty minutes earlier than the stipulated time. (I am not nervous, I said to myself. Just making sure I get there on time. Today was planned to be perfect, remember?).
Finally, the bus arrived. I and other commuters trooped in. The bus ride is for 30minutes. I still get to be at the interview and 50minutes earlier. (That should leave a good impression on the HR's team, I smiled).
I had a sit by the window side, the wind blowing in my face. And for a brief moment I was lost in thought, fantasizing about how my new life would be.
Like a thunderous strike out of nowhere. I heard a boooooooooom
(Sending me out of my fantasies)
We lost a wheel.
A wheel! Now! Wtf!
Everyone got down just as we did in, with curses flying around meant for the driver about how he must have known he had a bad wheel and didn't get it fixed.
Another news
He doesn't have an extra wheel
I checked my time we were half way into the journey. I still got time, time to trek.
Whilst others were trying to flag down a ride or two (which I knew would be difficult, private cars are scared of being robbed).
I began trekking, my own walk to the promise land. I walked fast, so fast I almost tripped.
Then I saw the shortcut, this would safe me a 5 minutes of journey in 2mins. I dashed through the path without thinking much about it.
I saw three other guys also passing through, they must be in a hurry too, I presumed. Soon I overtook them, when suddenly, I felt a hand grab me from behind and push me to the ground.
My suit!, I screamed.
I looked up ready to pounce on whoever that was and I saw I had a gang on me. One had a matchet and the other a knife. The one that grabbed me was asking me to bring out all I had. ( yea, I am being robbed. What a fucking perfect day?!!;)
I had nothing.I guess my suit said otherwise. If only they knew I borrowed it.
They searched everywhere, tearing my suit in process, ransacked my briefcase and they only got a little change. They got angry and started beating up.
They left.
I struggled to get up. Dust my self up. I looked raggedy. All sort of stains on my White. It was bad.
After a lot of limping. I got to the company gate an hour past the interview time.
The security man at the gate took a look at me once and assumed I was begger. He didn't care about what I had to say, so he slammed the gate right at me.
I sat on a slab outside, hoping to see someone. Someone I could explain to. After 2 hrs and no one. I gave up and went back home. I didn't have money on me so I trekked again.
I finally got home . 6 hours after I left home in the morning. I slept and the tears flowed freely...
I woke up in the middle of the night hungry. I made myself some cereals..
I could see telephone beeping. I had messages, must be my mother. I clicked to listen..
There she was asking if I was coming home for the Christmas holiday. I can't even face the family. Of course, I am not going...
I had another msg..
Listening...
It was from the company. They said not to bother coming in for the second interview, that I got the job. I am to resume after the holidays. My competition pulled out.
The message was sent 30mins before the stipulated time for the interview.
Wtf! Wtf!! Wtf!!
A little chill pill sometimes guys. A little.
