He is at the hotel lounge with another young lady, sipping wine. A bouquet of ninety-nine flowers in his hand, he whispers silkenly into her ear. “You are the only exception.”
She giggles and agrees to follow him upstairs.
The next morning, he leaves before she wakes – rise, rinse, repeat.
"But, you are, the only exception..."
No, I'm not promoting Paramore.
I cannot help it that this song was in my head ever since I saw that @felt.buzz's prompt for the Zapfic contest is "exception".
I have always found the lyrics meaningful:
And I've always lived like this,
Keeping a comfortable distance,
And up until now,
I had sworn to myself that I'm content
With loneliness,
Because none of it was ever worth the risk -
But, you are, the only exception.
I feel it mirrors quite accurately what I feel about romantic relationships being a risk - will I dare to make the plunge?
I'm currently in a serious relationship, but the true plunge will be actually getting married. We'll see. It's not that I don't desire to start a family (I really love, love children), but it's that immense risk that comes with immense love.
I'm not sure if I'm ready for it.
Putting that aside, this story is just a fun little piece about a player. I'll leave it to you to decide whether the girls are hapless victims (or not).
Let me know what you think!
