I hope everyone is doing well. My name is Alejandra Vasquez, I'm 22 years old and I'm from Venezuela. I'm a cellist and photographer in training. I found out about this platform thanks to my friend @naitreat.

Mi interés de pequeña, o, mejor dicho, el gran sueño que tenía era ser futbolista profesional. No había día que llegara a casa a jugar con mis amigos después de la escuela de música. Era contradictorio que estuviera en ese tipo de escuela cuando mi deseo era practicar un deporte, pero por cuestiones de esta creencia que existía (o existe, pero ya no se ve tanto) de que las niñas no practican ese deporte, terminé estudiando violonchelo aparte de la educación que todos tenemos. Es así que toda mi niñez la pasé con este querer de jugar en un equipo, pero perteneciendo a una orquesta.

My interest as a child, or rather, the big dream I had was to be a professional soccer player. There was not a day that went by that I came home to play with my friends after music school. It was contradictory that I was in that kind of school when my desire was to practice a sport, but because of this belief that existed (or exists, but is no longer seen so much) that girls do not practice that sport, I ended up studying cello apart from the education that we all have. So my whole childhood was spent with this desire to play in a team, but belonging to an orchestra.

Es hasta los 14 años que tomé la decisión de hablar con mi papá para poder practicar fútbol. Duré un año haciendo música y practicando simultáneamente, era muy difícil y tuve que elegir una así que me quedé con el deporte. En ese momento estaba feliz por esa decisión, pero la felicidad no me duró mucho. Seguí practicando unos meses más hasta que me di cuenta que realmente ya no me llenaba y tuve que salirme. El tema es que tampoco sentía que la música lo hacía, así que solo me quedé estudiando bachillerato y cuando me gradué tenía la ilusión de estudiar psicología, pensando que esa carrera tal vez si era lo que me apasionaba.

It wasn't until I was 14 years old that I decided to talk to my dad about practicing soccer. I lasted a year doing music and practicing simultaneously, it was very difficult and I had to choose one so I stayed with the sport. At the time I was happy about that decision, but the happiness didn't last long. I kept practicing for a few more months until I realized that it wasn't really fulfilling me anymore and I had to leave. The thing is that I didn't feel that music did it either, so I just stayed studying high school and when I graduated I had the illusion of studying psychology, thinking that maybe that career was what I was passionate about.

Estuve esperando cupo durante un año, pero tenía muchas personas por delante y no quería seguir esperando. Mi mamá me da la opción de estudiar contaduría en esa misma universidad, no era mi interés principal, pero si algo que llamaba mi atención entonces le dije que sí. ¿Qué pasa? Que justo días antes de ir al estado vecino donde se encuentra la universidad, dan noticia de que el COVID había llegado a Venezuela y como todos sabemos nos mandaron a cuarentena.

I was waiting for a place for a year, but I had a lot of people ahead of me and I didn't want to keep waiting. My mom gave me the option to study accounting at the same university, it was not my main interest, but it was something that caught my attention so I said yes. What happened? That just days before going to the neighboring state where the university is located, they give news that the COVID had arrived in Venezuela and as we all know they sent us to quarantine.

No recuerdo cuanto tiempo pasó para que volvieran a activar las cosas, pero si recuerdo que una universidad del estado donde vivo comenzó a implementar las clases virtuales. Mi mamá nuevamente me nombra el tema de estudiar contaduría, pero dada las circunstancias, sería en el estado donde vivo y yo acepté, no me sentía con muchas opciones.

I don't remember how much time passed before things were activated again, but I do remember that a university in the state where I live began to implement virtual classes. My mom again mentioned the subject of studying accounting, but given the circumstances, it would be in the state where I live and I accepted, I did not feel I had many options.

En ese proceso de volver a adaptarse a la vida cotidiana, un día normal para mí en YouTube me encuentro con este famoso fotógrafo español llamado Marcos Alberca. Yo me volví adicta a ver sus videos y admiraba mucho los resultados que obtenía en sus fotos, tanto así, que un día dije ‘’ok, la fotografía me llama la atención suficiente como para intentarlo, vamos a hacerlo’’. Mi primer modelo fue un primo, no dudó en apoyarme con esta idea y estoy muy agradecida con el por eso. Fue así que entré en el mundo de la fotografía a mis 17 años, no dejé de tomar fotos, siempre salía con ansías de ser mejor cada día y después de tanto tiempo por fin sentí que algo me apasionaba.

In that process of re-adapting to everyday life, one normal day for me on YouTube I came across this famous Spanish photographer named Marcos Alberca. I became addicted to watching his videos and I admired a lot the results he obtained in his photos, so much so, that one day I said ‘'ok, photography catches my attention enough to try it, let's do it’'. My first model was a cousin, he did not hesitate to support me with this idea and I am very grateful to him for that. That's how I entered the world of photography when I was 17 years old, I never stopped taking pictures, I always went out with the desire to be better every day and after so long I finally felt that I was passionate about something.

Un año después, otro primo (Músico. Olvidé decir que vengo de una familia de músicos) llega de visita a mi casa y me pregunta si me gustaría ser parte del intento de Guinness Récord a la orquesta más grande del mundo por parte de El Sistema de Orquestas y Coros Juveniles e Infantiles de Venezuela.. Le dije que si y empecé de nuevo a ensayar. Viajamos a Caracas y bueno, conseguimos romper el récord.

A year later, another cousin (Musician. I forgot to say that I come from a family of musicians) comes to visit me at home and asks me if I would like to be part of the Guinness Record attempt to the largest orchestra in the world by the System of Orchestras and Youth and Children's Choirs of Venezuela. I said yes and started rehearsing again. We traveled to Caracas and well, we managed to break the record.

Luego de esa experiencia, me pregunté a mí misma si sería buena idea seguir y no me arrepiento de la decisión que tomé (decidí que sí). Empecé en la Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de mi ciudad y por tanto estudio y constancia conseguí ser principal de la fila de Violonchelo. Abrieron una orquesta nueva que vendría siendo la orquesta que representa al estado, pero para poder ser integrante de dicha orquesta hay que audicionar. Recuerdo que nos pidieron extractos de la obertura 1812 de Tchaikovsky y la obertura festiva de Shostakovich. Afortunadamente quedé en esas audiciones como integrante fijo.

After that experience, I asked myself if it would be a good idea to continue and I don't regret the decision I made (I decided yes). I started in the Youth Symphony Orchestra of my city and through study and perseverance I got to be principal of the Cello row. They opened a new orchestra that would become the orchestra that represents the state, but in order to be a member of this orchestra you have to audition. I remember they asked us for excerpts from Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture and Shostakovich's Festive Overture. Fortunately, I was selected as a permanent member in those auditions.

Con el pasar del tiempo me fui dando cuenta que la música siempre me había hecho feliz y la disfrutaba demasiado, pero estaba cegada con este sueño frustrado de cuando era niña. A veces me arrepiento un poco de haber perdido casi 4 años de avance en mi instrumento, pero gracias a eso soy más consciente de lo que quiero en mi vida.

As time went by I realized that music had always made me happy and I enjoyed it too much, but I was blinded with this frustrated dream from when I was a child. Sometimes I regret a little bit that I lost almost 4 years of advancement in my instrument, but thanks to that I am more aware of what I want in my life.

Para mi la música es una disciplina, más allá de ser arte y disfrutarla, se necesita de estudio. Gracias a ella desarrollé la responsabilidad, la constancia, el saber ser líder y sobre todo la disciplina, este último siendo una de mis mayores virtudes.

For me music is a discipline, beyond being art and enjoying it, it requires study. Thanks to it I developed responsibility, perseverance, knowing how to be a leader and above all discipline, the latter being one of my greatest virtues.

Nunca imaginé que mis ganas de ser mejor en la música me llevarían a que el mismo Sistema me contratara. Actualmente soy F.I.A.M (Formador Integral Académico Musical) de la cátedra de violonchelo de mi estado. Me encuentro formando a niños, niñas y adolescentes en este hermoso arte como lo es la música y lo hago con las mejores ganas.

I never imagined that my desire to be better in music would lead me to be hired by the same system. Currently I am F.I.A.M. (Formador Integral Académico Musical) of the cello chair in my state. I am training children and adolescents in this beautiful art of music and I do it with the best desire.

La música y la fotografía sin duda son mis motivos de vida. Me hacen muy feliz y las ganas de ser mejor cada día nunca faltan. Es algo que espero lograr con todos mis estudiantes, ser un guía para ellos y ayudarlos a encontrar aquello que les apasione y así vivir una vida que los haga feliz

Music and photography are undoubtedly my reasons for living. They make me very happy and the desire to be better every day is never lacking. It is something I hope to achieve with all my students, to be a guide for them and help them to find what they are passionate about and live a life that makes them happy.
