_Los Petrocelli: Crónica de una infancia trastornada. Capítulo II. La colección de vidas ajenas_

Siempre les reclamé a mis padres por qué tuvimos que mudarnos, específicamente, frente a esa casa: la de los Petrocelli. Me ignoraron, tal vez por la edad que tenía, pero no se daban cuenta del daño irreparable que aquel sitio me estaba haciendo.

Después de lo que conté en la primera historia, pensé que nada más podía perturbarme. Pero estaba equivocado. Aquello solo fue el inicio.

Para relatar esta segunda historia, he tenido que enterrar —y dejar atrás— la sensación persistente de no saber quién era el verdadero fantasma: ellos o yo. Sin embargo, con esta vivencia también dejó una profunda huella en mi vida.

Los Petrocelli tenían una afición peculiar: coleccionaban objetos. No eran antigüedades ni obras de arte, sino cosas cotidianas: un cepillo de dientes usado, una llave oxidada, un trozo de tela de un vestido cualquiera.

Al principio, me pareció que aquella colección era solo una rareza más de los Petrocelli, una manía extraña sin importancia. Pero entonces empecé a notar cosas que me incomodaban. Había un cepillo de dientes idéntico al que mi abuelo usaba antes de mudarse. Y después, una llave... igualita a la que mi tía llevaba siempre en el llavero de cuero, aunque vivía a kilómetros de aquí.

Quise pensar que era casualidad, que tal vez estaba viendo similitudes donde no las había. Pero algo dentro de mí no se calmaba. Pero esa sensación rara no se fue… al contrario, creció cuando empecé a ver cosas más íntimas. Un día, vi a la señora Petrocelli en su porche, tejiendo con un hilo de lana idéntico al que mi madre había comprado la semana anterior.

Luego, el señor Petrocelli podaba sus matas con unas tijeras de jardinería que juraría eran las de mi padre. Lo más escalofriante era que esos objetos desaparecían misteriosamente de nuestra casa, solo para reaparecer, pulcramente expuestos, en las estanterías de ellos.

Nunca hubo señales de robo: ni puertas forzadas, ni ventanas rotas, ni un solo ruido en la madrugada. Era como si las cosas se esfumaran solas, como si algo invisible se llevara lo que nos pertenecía sin dejar huella.

Mis padres, claro, nunca me tomaron en serio. Decían que era mi imaginación, que yo siempre perdía las cosas, que seguro las había dejado por ahí. Pero yo sabía lo que estaba viendo. Los Petrocelli no acumulaban trastos por capricho. Era como si cada objeto que tomaban guardara algo de nosotros: una historia, un recuerdo, un pedazo de nuestra vida. Y lo peor era esa sensación... como si ellos se estuvieran quedando con todo eso, sin que nosotros pudiéramos evitarlo.

La casa del frente se convirtió en una especie de museo de vidas ajenas, una manifestación silenciosa y tangible de cómo, poco a poco, los Petrocelli se apoderaban de nuestra esencia, sin dejar rastro de su intrusión.

No era un miedo de esos que te hacen gritar. Era peor. Era esa sensación sorda y persistente de que te han quitado algo —algo tuyo, íntimo— sin que tengas idea de cuándo, ni cómo, ni por qué.

_The Petrocellis: Chronicle of a Disturbed Childhood. Chapter II. The Collection of Borrowed Lives_

I always questioned my parents about why we had to move right across from that house: the Petrocellis’. They ignored me, maybe because of how young I was, but they didn’t realize the irreparable harm that place was doing to me.

After what I shared in the first story, I thought nothing else could shake me. But I was wrong. That was just the beginning.

To tell this second story, I had to bury—and leave behind—that lingering feeling of not knowing who the real ghost was: them or me. Still, this experience left a deep mark on my life.

The Petrocellis had a peculiar hobby: they collected objects. Not antiques or works of art, but everyday things—a used toothbrush, a rusty key, a scrap of fabric from an ordinary dress.

At first, I thought it was just another one of their odd quirks, a harmless obsession. But then I began noticing things that made me uneasy. There was a toothbrush identical to the one my grandfather used before he moved. Then, a key—just like the one my aunt always kept on her leather keychain, even though she lived miles away.

I wanted to believe it was a coincidence, that maybe I was seeing similarities where there were none. But the feeling didn’t go away... in fact, it grew stronger when I started noticing more intimate things. One day, I saw Mrs. Petrocelli on her porch, knitting with the exact same yarn my mother had bought the week before.

Then, Mr. Petrocelli was trimming his bushes with gardening shears that I swear belonged to my father. The creepiest part was that these items disappeared mysteriously from our house, only to reappear, neatly displayed, on their shelves.

There were never signs of a break-in: no forced doors, no broken windows, not a single sound during the night. It was as if things simply vanished, as if something invisible took what was ours without leaving a trace.

Of course, my parents never believed me. They said it was my imagination, that I always lost things, that I probably just misplaced them. But I knew what I was seeing. The Petrocellis weren’t hoarding junk for no reason. It was as if each item they took held something of ours: a story, a memory, a piece of our life. And the worst part was that feeling... like they were keeping all of it, and there was nothing we could do.

The house across the street became a sort of museum of borrowed lives, a silent and tangible manifestation of how, little by little, the Petrocellis were stealing our essence, leaving no trace of their intrusion.

This wasn’t the kind of fear that makes you scream. It was worse. It was that dull, persistent feeling that something deeply yours had been taken—and you had no idea when, how, or why.
