To get along with this one, You need to overcome your fear of snakes. The fear of snakes, known as ophidiophobia, is one of the most common phobias. This fear can stem from a combination of evolutionary, psychological, and cultural factors. This one shall also block some waves approaching the coast of France. I came with the Light!

Um mit dir hier klarzukommen, musst du deine Angst vor Schlangen überwinden! Die Angst vor Schlangen, auch Ophidiophobie genannt, ist eine der häufigsten Phobien überhaupt. Diese Furcht kann durch eine Mischung aus evolutionären, psychologischen und kulturellen Faktoren entstehen. Aber keine Sorge, diese Schlange soll auch ein paar Wellen abhalten, die die Küste Frankreichs ansteuern!

My last trip brought me to the farthest northwestern corners of France. Staying a few days also in Nantes I had to go to the ocean. Of course, one has to! Investigating a lot of different spots I marked this impressive piece of a sculpture by French-Chinese artist Huang Yong Ping. It's located at the river mouth of the Lire and is looking at the Saint-Nazaire bridge. As if it was placed to protect it. What a subject for night photography. I was there all by myself so I could not make it too complicated.

Meine letzte Reise führte mich in die entlegensten nordwestlichen Ecken Frankreichs. Nach ein paar Tagen in Nantes musste ich natürlich zum Ozean – das gehört sich so! Ich habe viele verschiedene Orte erkundet und dabei dieses beeindruckende Kunstwerk des französisch-chinesischen Künstlers Huang Yong Ping entdeckt. Es liegt an der Mündung der Loire und schaut direkt auf die Brücke von Saint-Nazaire, als würde es sie beschützen. Was für ein Motiv für Nachtfotografie! Ich war ganz allein dort, also konnte ich es nicht zu kompliziert machen.

Since the Serpent of the ocean is lying pretty flat I had not too many options since I was all alone. A higher ground vantage point would be cool to see the entire thing but then I also wanted to get closer to get a close-up of the main feature. The snakehead had to be featured! At the same time, the low tide slowly started. You can observe that the snake teeth in the lower jar started to show just before I was done for the night. I did think to stay longer but I was already pretty tired. So I called it a night and took of driving the hour back to Nantes.

Da das Ding da so ziemlich flach liegt, hatte ich nicht viele Optionen, da ich allein war. Ein höherer Aussichtspunkt wäre ideal gewesen, um das ganze Kunstwerk zu zeigen, aber ich wollte auch näher heran, um ein Close-up des Schlangenkopf zu machen.! Langsam kam dann auch die Ebbe und das Wasser zig sich langsam zurück. Man konnte beobachten, wie die Zähne der Schlange vom Kiefer sichtbar wurden. Ich überlegte, länger zu bleiben, aber war schon ziemlich müde. Also beschloss ich mich auf den einstündigen Rückweg nach Nantes zu machen.

Took me a while to find the balance between the flashlights I needed to light up the serpent and show some stars before blowing out by the light pollution from the city in the background. In the end, I settled for ISO 800 on the camera and F8 at 24mm on my Canon 24-205mm F4 lens. This gave my great balance and I go some stars to show in the sky too.

Es hat eine Weile gedauert, bis ich die richtige Balance fand zwischen den Taschenlampen, die ich brauchte, um die Schlange zu beleuchten, und den Sternen, die sichtbar bleiben sollten, ohne durch die Lichtverschmutzung der Stadt im Hintergrund überstrahlt zu werden. Am Ende entschied ich mich für ISO 800 an der Kamera und Blende F8 bei 24 mm auf meinem Canon 24-105 mm F4-Objektiv. Das gab mir eine gute Balance.

As the water slowly retrieved I got closer and closer to the head without getting wet. Using red and green I gave the skull the right scary note I wanted. Fire of some sort would have been cool, and a bit of light from underwater would also been nice. Anyway many ideas that are in my head if I return to this beach.

Während sich das Wasser langsam zurückzog, kam ich dem Kopf immer näher, ohne nass werden zu müssen. Mit Rot und Grün gab ich dem Schädel die gruselige Note, die ich wollte. Feuer in irgendeiner Form wäre cool gewesen, und ein wenig Licht von unten wäre auch schön gewesen. Auf jeden Fall gibt es viele Ideen in meinem Kopf, falls ich an diesen Strand zurückkehre.

I was confused for a moment when I saw the teeth of the lower jaw rising from the ocean. Then I thought I should have waited much longer and start righ here and now. But by now, I had already been runnin up and down the beach for ages, so enough was enough.

Kurz war ich bisschen irritiert, als ich die Zähne des Unterkiefers aus dem Meer kommen sah. Dann dachte ich nur ich hätte viel länger warten sollen, bevor ich hier anfange. Nun bin ich aber schon ewig den Strand hoch und runter gelaufen langsam reichts ja auch.

Little Poisonish green and bloody red, please. I wasn't all that sure about the colors but the green worked pretty well.

Ein wenig Giftgrün und Blutrot, bitte. Ich war mir nicht ganz sicher mit den Farben, aber das Giftgrün und Feuer/Blutrot saß ziemlich gut.
