Immer wieder höre ich aus Deutschland, der Glasfaserausbau zieht sich. Ein Anschluss direkt an Glasfaser sei nicht möglich, oder es werden hohe Gebühren für einen Anschluss gefordert, wenn dieser noch gelegt werden muss. Auch die monatlichen anfallenden Gebühren für Glasfaser wären nicht ohne. Ich habe es weiter nicht überprüft, ich belasse es dabei, was ich so gehört habe. Das, was ich aus den Nachrichten hin und wieder aufschnappe, scheint aber den Erzählungen zu entsprechen.

I keep hearing from Germany that the fiber optic expansion is dragging on. A connection directly to fiber optics is not possible, or high fees are demanded for a connection if it still has to be installed. The monthly fees for fiber optics would also be quite high. I haven't checked that all any further, so I'll leave it at what I've heard. But what I pick up from the news from time to time seems to correspond to the stories.

Also, wie ist das hier bei mir so. Ich möchte direkt hervorheben, das war meine persönliche Erfahrung. Selbst in Malaysia, ist nicht überall, alles aus Gold. Vor ein paar Monaten hatte ich noch DSL über eine antiquierte Kupferleitung. Eines Tages dann, bemerkte ich Bauarbeiten auf dem Parkplatz vor meinem Wohnblock. Orange Leitung auf einer Trommel. Oha, könnte das etwa Glasfaser sein? Die Leitung wurde durch irgendwelche Schächte unter dem Parkplatz gezogen. Wenige Tage danach, waren auf meiner Etage und auf jeder anderen, mir unbekannte Verteilerkästen. Kurz danach gab es auf dem Parkplatz einen Stand mit Leuten, die auf das neue Glasfaserangebot aufmerksam gemacht haben in dem Gebiet.

So, how is it here with me. I would like to emphasize directly, that was my personal experience. Even in Malaysia, not everything is made of gold. A few months ago, I still had DSL via an antiquated copper line. Then one day I noticed construction work in the parking lot in front of my apartment block. Orange cable on a drum. Oh, could that be fiber optics? The cable was being pulled through some shafts under the parking lot. A few days later, however, there were unknown distribution boxes on my floor and on every other floor. Shortly afterwards, there was a stand in the parking lot with people drawing attention to the new fiber optic offer in the area.

Interessiert nachgefragt, stellte sich heraus, 100 Mbps Download (~12 Mbs) kosten (30 Euro umgerechnet, pi mal Daumen) nicht viel mehr als das, was ich bereits hatte für den Preis. Popelige 8Mbps (~1 Mbs). Zugegriffen! Drei Tage nach Erteilen des Auftrages sind die Techniker gekommen. Vom Verteilerkasten wurde, im malaysischen Stil, die Glasfaserleitung bis vor meine Tür verlegt, befestigt im Flur, an der Decke, dort wo gerade Platz war.

Inquiring with interest, it turned out 100 Mbps download (~12 Mbs) cost (30 Euro converted, approximately) not much more than what I already had for the price. A measly 8Mbps (~1 Mbs). I grabbed it! Three days after placing the order, the technicians arrived. The fiber optic cable was laid, Malaysian style, from the distribution box to my door, fixed in the hallway, on the ceiling, wherever there was space.

Und weil Malaysia, Malaysia ist, ging es bei mir in der Bude so weiter. Über der Türschwelle wurde schnell ein Loch gebohrt, Leitung durch, etwas Spachtel ins Loch, soweit so gut.

And because Malaysia is Malaysia, that's how it went on in my flat. A hole was quickly drilled above the doorstep, the cable passed through, some filler put into the hole, so far so good.

Ich wurde gefragt, wo der Router hin soll, den es zum Angebot gab, schnell gezeigt, die Leitung wurde bis dahin, in die Ecke von Wand und Boden gelegt, etwas Heißkleber hier und da drauf zum Fixieren. Leitung abgeschnitten, der Techniker installierte den Anschlussstecker aufs Ende, ein Test, ob alles funktioniert, fertig. So einfach. Von der Bestellung bis zum Anschluss in nur drei Tagen. Bye Bye Kupferleitung. Steckst noch in der Wand, denke jedoch nicht mehr an dich.

I was asked where the router should go, which was on offer, quickly shown, the cable was laid up to there, in the corner of the wall and floor, some hot glue here and there to fix it. So simple. From order to connection in just three days. Bye bye copper cable. It's still in the wall, but I don't think about you anymore.

Nach ungefähr fast einem Jahr, das ist gerade erst so eine Woche her vom Zeitpunkt des veröffentlichen des Beitrages, gab es ein Upgrade. Gleicher monatlicher Preis, 300 Mbps (~35 Mbs irgendwas). Nicht immer habe ich die vollen 300Mbps, knickt gerne auf 200Mbps ein, etwas, das mich nicht weiter stört, habe mehr als ich brauche, so oder so. Ich bin beim staatlichen Anbieter für Telekommunikation in Malaysia. Private gibt es genauso, nur überzeugen mich die Leistungen derer bisher nicht. Angeboten werden bis zu 2 Gb. Wer braucht das?

After about almost a year, which is just about a week ago from the time of posting, there was an upgrade. Same monthly price, 300 Mbps (~35 Mbs something). I don't always have the full 300Mbps, likes to buckle down to 200Mbps, something that doesn't bother me much, have more than I need either way. I am with the state provider for telecommunications in Malaysia. There are also private providers, but I'm not convinced by their performance so far. They offer up to 2 Gb. Who needs that?

Bleibt nur noch zu sagen - wenn es läuft, dann läuft es. Während dessen, im ländlichen Raum hapert es mit gutem Mobilfunk, lobend erwähnen möchte ich, es wird weiter ausgebaut. Wie gesagt, auch hier bei mir ist nicht alles aus Gold.

All that remains is to say - when it works, it works. Meanwhile, there is a lack of good mobile communications in rural areas, but I would like to praise the fact that it is still being developed. As I said, not everything here is made of gold.
