Since I arrived in Medellín, one of my wishes was to go hiking, as the entire city is surrounded by beautiful mountains. To achieve this goal, I mainly needed a group of friends who enjoyed outdoor sports activities. It took me about three months to find them, but I did it! So now, I’ll tell you about my adventure exploring my first mountain in this wonderful city. The name of the hill is El Asfixiadero, and without a doubt, it lives up to its name. However, it rewards you with breathtaking views that make the incredible effort of the climb absolutely worth it. # >Desde que llegué a Medellín, uno de mis deseos era hacer senderismo, ya que toda la ciudad está rodeada de hermosas montañas. Para lograr este objetivo principalmente necesitaba un grupo de amigos que disfrutaran de las actividades deportivas al aire libre, me costó unos 3 meses conseguirlos, pero lo logré, así que a continuación les cuento mi aventura explorando mi primera montaña en esta maravillosa ciudad. El nombre del cerro es "El Asfixiadero" y sin lugar a dudas es una experiencia que hace honor a su nombre, pero te recompensa con vistas impresionantes que hacen que el increíble esfuerzo de la subida valga totalmente la pena.

The route starts with a VERY steep and long trail that tests even the most optimistic hikers. It’s a demanding climb, especially if you’re not experienced in hiking. The good news is that you can take your time—though I couldn’t, since I was in a group, but my body was screaming for a few minutes of rest 😂. As you ascend, the vegetation becomes denser, surrounding you with trees, ferns, and wildflowers of all colors. You also pass by several farms and recreational spots, making you think about how amazing it must be to live there, away from the city and enjoying the fresh mountain air. Occasionally, you might spot a curious bird among the branches, and if you're lucky, even a couple of squirrels laughing at those of us struggling our way up. # >La ruta comienza con un sendero MUY empinado y largo que pone a prueba hasta al más optimista. Es una subida exigente, especialmente si no eres un experto en senderismo, pero la buena noticia es que puedes tomártelo con calma, cosa que no yo pude hacer porque iba en grupo, pero mi cuerpo me pedía a gritos unos minutos de descanso 😂. A medida que asciendes, la vegetación se vuelve más densa y te encuentras rodeado de árboles, helechos y flores silvestres de todos los colores, además te encuentras con varias fincas y lugares recreativos que te hacen pensar en lo genial que debe ser vivir por allí, alejado de la ciudad y disfrutando del clima de montaña. De vez en cuando, se cruzan algún ave curiosa entre las ramas, y si tienes suerte, hasta puedes ver un par de ardillas riéndose de los que venimos subiendo con la lengua afuera de cansancio.

One of the most amusing details of the hike is the number of people who bring their dogs. From brave little chihuahuas to massive golden retrievers, they all seem to enjoy the trail with twice the energy of their owners—sometimes even dressed in stylish pet outfits. The highlight for me was a dog wearing a tiny cap—love at first sight, haha! The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, with nature providing a visually stunning space to connect with its energy. # >Uno de los detalles más curiosos de la caminata es la cantidad de personas que llevan a sus perros. Desde chihuahuas valientes hasta enormes golden retrievers, todos parecen disfrutar del recorrido con el doble de energía que sus dueños, incluso con ropa o accesorios caninos muy fashion, el que más me encantó fue un perrito que tenía puesta una gorra jajaja, amor a primera vista. Es un ambiente relajado y familiar, donde la naturaleza nos regala un espacio visualmente hermoso para conectar con su energía.

The best part of the climb is, without a doubt, the small strategic stops that make the journey more manageable. Along the way, you’ll find tiny stalls selling fresh fruits and natural juices—perfect for regaining energy. And for those who want to treat themselves, there are also delicious sweet corn arepas with cheese, a well-deserved reward after burning so many calories on the way up. Also in the middle of the climb there is an open-air public gym, if you just want to warm up your legs and then start your training routine. # >La mejor parte de la subida, sin duda, son las pequeñas paradas estratégicas que hacen más llevadero el camino. En distintos puntos puedes encontrar pequeñas tiendas que ofrecen frutas y jugos naturales recién preparados, perfectos para recuperar fuerzas. Para los que quieren darse otro tipo de gustos, también pueden encontrar unas deliciosas arepas de maíz dulce con queso, una merecida compra que se vuelve imprescindible después de quemar tantas calorías en la subida. También en medio de la subida hay un gimnasio público al aire libre, por si solo gustas calentar las piernas para luego lanzarte tu buena rutina de entrenamiento.

Once at the top, exhaustion disappears in an instant. The panoramic view of Medellín is breathtaking, with the city stretching between mountains and the clear sky creating the perfect contrast. It’s a beautiful valley that strongly reminds me of my beloved Caracas. But beyond the view, what makes this place special is the variety of activities you can enjoy at the summit. The open green space is perfect for a picnic with friends, relaxing on the grass, reading a book, or simply soaking in the fresh air. It’s also a great spot for flying kites, playing soccer, practicing yoga, or tossing a frisbee with Medellín at your feet. # >Una vez en la cima, el cansancio se te olvida en un milisegundo. La vista panorámica de Medellín es espectacular, con la ciudad extendiéndose entre montañas y el cielo despejado creando un contraste perfecto, un hermoso valle que definitivamente me recuerda muchísimo a mi amada Caracas. Pero más allá de la vista, otra de las cosas que hace especial este lugar es la cantidad de actividades que puedes planificar para disfrutar le día en la cima. Es un espacio verde muy amplio, ideal para hacer un picnic con amigos, relajarte sobre el césped, leer un libro y disfrutar del aire fresco. También es un sitio perfecto para volar cometas, jugar fútbol, hacer yoga o simplemente lanzar un frisbee con Medellín a tus pies.

My group and I took the time to rest and enjoy some laughs and good conversation. We also practiced some handstands, taking advantage of the soft, well-maintained grass in case of a fall. Later, we climbed a little higher to an area where we could interact with horses and get an even better view of the city. If you're visiting with kids or pets, be cautious—there are electric fences, and we even saw a playful dog get a small shock when it got too close. # >Mi grupo y yo aprovechamos para descansar y compartir un rato entre risas y una buena conversación. También practicamos un poco la parada de manos, aprovechando que la caída no sería muy fuerte gracias a la grama (césped) verde y bien cuidada, luego nos dispusimos a subir un poco más arriba donde podías interactuar con caballos y tener una vista incluso mejor de la ciudad. Hay que estar atentos si vas con niños o mascotas porque hay cercas con electricidad, incluso vimos como un perrito juguetón se electrocutó (levemente) al acercarse a una de las cercas.
