A few days ago, I watched a TV service about bulldogs and their problems on TV. These dogs are very sponsored by the Vips, creating a real fashion. Bulldogs unfortunately often manifest health problems, in particular the respiratory system; externalizing what is called Brachycephalic syndrome in veterinary medicine. These are three problems, often associated, but sometimes also present alone. The first problem concerns the nostrils: often the bulldog suffers from stenosis of the nostrils (they are more closed than normal), and therefore it is difficult to inhale air. The second problem concerns the soft palate: the bulldog suffers from hyperplasia of the soft palate, a problem that essentially implies a surplus of this tissue that obstructs the entry of air. The third problem concerns the size of the trachea: in the bulldog it may be smaller than normal and give rise to tracheal hypoplasia. In these cases the diameter of the trachea is very small and does not allow a good intake of air. All these anatomical defects, do not allow the dog a good oxygenation, thus causing a revolution of the air flow circulating in the upper airways and causing clinical disorders of obstruction of the latter such as: noisy breathing, stridors, cyanosis, syncope. These clinical signs are most evident when the dog is subjected to physical exertion, state of excitement and high environmental temperature. These are defects related to the morphology of the bulldog, and are only partly resolvable surgically. On these dogs there is a very ruthless market, both in Italy and abroad. In Romania for example, there is a sale without documentation, dogs are without mandatory vaccinations, and bypassing customs is very simple. Unscrupulous sellers, they are enriched on the skin of poor beasts torn from their mother too early, and held in very sanitary conditions. Prices range from 400, up to 700 euros, for the most popular breed: the blue-eyed French bulldog. In Italy the conditions are not better, these dogs are sold for prices much higher, but most of the farms are real lagers, where the mothers of puppies are exhausted by continuous pregnancies. In fact, very often breeders do not allow to see the mother, before buying the puppy, and the pedigree issued by the latter, are not originating from the ENCI (the only body responsible for the endorsement of the pedigree). It is very important to be aware of this reality, to avoid perpetrating further suffering. In my opinion, the best choice that can be made remains in adoption, rather than in the purchase of a pet.

Qualche giorno fa, ho guardato in TV un servizio che parlava dei cani bulldog, e delle loro problematiche. Questi cani vengono molto sponsorizzati dai Vips, creandone una vera e propria moda. I bulldog purtroppo, spesso manifestano delle problematiche di salute, in particolare all'apparato respiratorio; esternando quella che in medicina veterinaria viene definita sindrome Brachicefalica. Si tratta di tre problematiche, spesso associate, ma talvolta presenti anche da sole. Il primo problema riguarda le narici: spesso il bulldog soffre di stenosi delle narici ( sono più chiuse rispetto al normale), e quindi fa fatica ad inalare aria. Il secondo problema riguarda il palato molle: il bulldog soffre di iperplasia del palato molle, una problematica che implica in sostanza un'eccedenza di questo tessuto che ostruisce l'ingresso di aria. Il terzo problema riguarda la dimensione della trachea: nel bulldog può essere di dimensione più piccola del normale e dare origine all'ipoplasia tracheale. In questi casi il diametro della trachea è molto piccolo e non consente un buon ingresso di aria. Tutti questi difetti anatomici, non consentono al cane una buona ossigenazione, provocando quindi una rivoluzione del flusso d'aria circolante nelle vie aeree superiori e causando disturbi clinici di ostruzione di queste ultime quali: respirazione rumorosa, stridori, cianosi, sincope. Questi segni clinici si manifestano maggiormente quando il cane è sottoposto a sforzi fisici, stato di eccitazione ed elevata temperatura ambientale. Questi sono difetti correlati alla morfologia del bulldog, e sono solamente in parte risolvibili chirurgicamente. Su questi cani esiste un mercato molto spietato, sia in Italia, che all'estero. In Romania ad esempio, vi è una vendita senza documentazione, i cani sono privi delle vaccinazioni obbligatorie, ed aggirare la dogana è molto semplice. Venditori senza scrupoli, si arricchiscono sulla pelle di povere bestiole strappate dalla madre troppo presto, e detenuti in condizioni igienico-sanitarie molto sommarie. I prezzi variano dai 400, fino ad arrivare ai 700 euro, per la razza più richiesta: il bulldog francese dagli occhi blu. In Italia le condizioni non sono migliori, questi cani vengono venduti per prezzi nettamente superiori, ma la maggior parte degli allevamenti sono dei veri e propri lager, dove le madri dei cuccioli vengono stremate da continue gravidanze. Infatti, molto spesso gli allevatori non permettono di poter vedere la madre, prima dell'acquisto del cucciolo,e i pedigree rilasciati da quest'ultimi, non sono originari dell' ENCI (l'unico ente preposto alla vidimazione del pedigree). é molto importante essere a conoscenza di questa realtà, per evitare di perpetrare ulteriore sofferenza. A mio avviso, la miglior scelta che si possa fare rimane nell'adozione, piuttosto che nell'acquisto di un animale da compagnia.
