Una reflexión que ayudará al Street Workout

En este nuevo post en #HCalisthenics vengo a hacer una reflexión sobre un tema un poco polémico. Se trata de los egos en el street workout que muchas veces vienen disfrazados de la esencia del deporte y no, lo que presento aquí no es una simple opinión, puesto que soy muy bueno argumentando, fundamentaré mis ideas con fuentes y citas importantes sobre mi postura al respecto.

Primero que nada he de aclarar que todo este tema vino a mi mente por las palabras del compañero @angel-gonzalez, con quien tuve el placer de compartir este lunes en el nuevo Home Gym, un gimnasio de calistenia recién aperturado en la ciudad de Maracaibo. El compañero dijo abiertamente que para él, cito parafraseando: "la verdadera esencia del street wokout era el free style" y que por lo tanto todo lo demás es un adorno o una vaga imitación (quizás despreciable) de lo que es en realidad este movimiento sociodeportivo. Más allá de mi apreciación personal, me pregunté si esta concepción es realmente una postura propia o son por el contrario, actitudes aprendidas de algunos miembros de la comunidad con un ego un poco muy alto.

Podemos empezar remitiéndonos a la historia del Street Workout la cual, a diferencia de lo que muchos creen, inició propiamente en el año 2005 con grupos como Ruff Ryders y Bartendaz, dedicados a incluir a los excluidos y vulnerables de la sociedad a través de la actividad física más que a entrenar atletas de alto nivel con un gran dominio de su propio peso corporal. Esto quiere decir, que la esencia del movimiento es social más que deportiva, puesto que a través de estas organizaciones se ofrecían motivaciones y aspiraciones sanas a personas que pasaban por momentos difíciles en sus vidas y a las cuales les costaría mucho salir de su dura situación. De esta manera, la verdadera esencia del Street Workout es ser un movimiento de grupos de apoyo social.

Esto no quiere decir que la parte deportiva del Street Workout (y por lo tanto la competitiva) deba ser menospreciada, pero sí quiere decir que el movimiento debe crecer en pro de reducir las desigualdades en nuestras sociedades, puesto que ayudar a alguien que se encuentra abandonado y sin esperanzas es mucho más importante y trascendente que cualquier logro que yo como individuo pueda obtener como atleta de alto rendimiento en una competencia, porque los trofeos y premios no cambian el mundo, ayudar a otros sí.

Por otra parte, hablando de la esencia pura y dura del deporte, el Street Workout está compuesto por movimientos básicos en sus inicios, simples dominadas, flexiones, sentadillas y cualquier ejercicio de calistenia en general. La razón de esto es evidente: alguien que nunca en su vida se ha movido no puede llegar a una barra y hacer un movimiento 360 a la primera porque lo más probable es que se lesione o le ocurra algo peor si no tiene la mínima fuerza y agilidad para mantenerse en la barra. Estamos hablando de que, el Free Style como modalidad del Street Workout, requiere de ejercicios básicos para desarrollarse, por lo tanto, el Street Workout no es sólo Free Style.

Para apoyar todo lo anterior está el artículo de Wikipedia, el cual está fundamentado en el libro "El entrenamiento con el peso corporal. La base de todos los deportes" del autor García. Este artículo reconoce al Free Style sólo como una de las 5 ramas existentes en la calistenia, y como otra de esas ramas califica el Workout Style la cual es una modalidad consistente de movimientos básicos de calistenia de toda la vida. De esta manera, el Street Workout no se restringe a jóvenes, sino que puede alcanzar también a adultos, adultos mayores y niños, en general, a un público mucho más amplio que puede a su vez, contribuir con el movimiento deportivo.

_{La verdad es que el Street Workout es accesible gracias a su esencia humanista.}

En consecuencia de lo anteriormente dicho, decir que el Free Style es todo el Street Workout no es sólo una contradicción incongruente, sino que además es dañino para el movimiento, porque restringe el deporte y el movimiento a un nicho muy particular y a un target hiperespecífico, lo que evita su popularidad y su reconocimiento a nivel nacional e internacional. Ninguna persona que crea que el Street Workout es un entrenamiento para jóvenes y para atletas de alto nivel querrá entrenarlo y por lo tanto, no dará recursos ni esfuerzos al movimiento.

De esta manera, gracias a la percepción de los atletas y a la promoción de falsas esencias, el movimiento se cierra y se restringe, lo que conlleva con el tiempo al estancamiento y la monotonía, evitando inclusive que alcance a un estado formalizado en el cual el deporte pueda llegar a los Juegos Olímpicos. Podemos estar de acuerdo en que el Free Style es la modalidad más vistosas, llamativa, impresionante y difícil del Street Workout, pero de allí a que sea todo el Street Workout hay un amplio trecho y cualquiera con desconocimiento podría decir que son simples piruetas y que en un circo las hacen a mayor altura.

_{Limitar al Street Workout es hacerle daño a todo el movimiento y hacerle daño a personas que necesitan ayuda.}

Por último, es posible inferir que esta cuestión de "el verdadero Street Workout" no es más que un llamado de atención de alguien que ha logrado dominar su cuerpo, pero no su mente. Parece un esfuerzo sin resultados por llamar la atención e intentar destacar, para demostrar que se es especial en algún sentido que satisfaga las propias expectativas. Alguien que afirma esto seguramente practica Free Style y considera que eso es lo único que lo hace especial, ignorando por completo el valor que tiene como persona y como miembro de la comunidad e ignorando y despreciando a su vez el valor de los esfuerzos de otros en las otras modalidades, incluso sin darse cuenta. Sostener esta postura es por lo tanto, inconsciente y corrosivo para el Street Workout, porque sí, volar en las barras es grandioso e impresionante, pero saber aterrizar y poner los pies en la tierra es lo que cierra un combo con broche de oro.

A reflection that will help Street Workout

In this new post in #HCalisthenics I come to make a reflection on a somewhat controversial topic. It is about egos in street workout that often come disguised as the essence of the sport and no, what I present here is not a simple opinion, since I am very good at arguing, I will substantiate my ideas with sources and important quotes about my position on the matter.

First of all, I have to clarify that this whole topic came to my mind because of the words of my colleague @angel-gonzalez, with whom I had the pleasure of sharing this Monday in the new Home Gym, a calisthenics gym recently opened in the city of Maracaibo. The fellow openly said that for him, I quote paraphrasing: "the true essence of street wokout was the free style" and therefore everything else is an ornament or a vague imitation (perhaps despicable) of what this socio-sports movement really is. Beyond my personal appreciation, I wondered if this conception is really an own position or are on the contrary, attitudes learned from some members of the community with an ego a little too high.

We can start by referring to the history of Street Workout which, contrary to what many believe, properly began in 2005 with groups like Ruff Ryders and Bartendaz, dedicated to to include the excluded and vulnerable in society through physical activity rather than training high-level athletes with a great command of their own body weight. This means that the essence of the movement is social rather than sporting, since through these organizations, motivation and healthy aspirations were offered to people who were going through difficult times in their lives and who would have a hard time getting out of their hard situation. In this way, the true essence of Street Workout is to be a movement of social support groups.

Esto no quiere decir que la parte deportiva del Street Workout (y por lo tanto la competitiva) deba ser menospreciada, pero sí quiere decir que el movimiento debe crecer en pro de reducir las desigualdades en nuestras sociedades, puesto que ayudar a alguien que se encuentra abandonado y sin esperanzas es mucho más importante y trascendente que cualquier logro que yo como individuo pueda obtener como atleta de alto rendimiento en una competencia, porque los trofeos y premios no cambian el mundo, ayudar a otros sí.

On the other hand, speaking of the pure and hard essence of the sport, Street Workout is composed of basic movements in its beginnings, simple pull-ups, push-ups, squats and any calisthenics exercise in general. The reason for this is obvious: someone who has never moved in his life can't get to a bar and do a 360 movement on the first try because he will most likely get injured or worse if he doesn't have the minimum strength and agility to stay on the bar. We are talking about the fact that Free Style as a Street Workout modality requires basic exercises to develop, therefore, Street Workout is not only Free Style.

In support of all of the above is the Wikipedia article, which is based on the book "Body weight training. The basis of all sports" of the author García. This article recognizes Free Style as only one of the 5 existing branches of calisthenics, and as another of those branches qualifies Workout Style which is a modality consisting of basic lifelong calisthenics movements. In this way, Street Workout is not restricted to young people, but can also reach adults, seniors and children, in general, a much wider audience that can in turn, contribute to the sport movement.

As a consequence of the above, to say that Free Style is all Street Workout is not only an incongruous contradiction, but it is also harmful to the movement, because it restricts the sport and the movement to a very particular niche and a hyper-specific target, which prevents its popularity and recognition at a national and international level. No one who believes that Street Workout is a workout for young people and top athletes will want to train it and therefore, will not give resources or effort to the movement.

In this way, thanks to the perception of athletes and the promotion of false essences, the movement is closed and restricted, which eventually leads to stagnation and monotony, even preventing it from reaching a formalized state in which the sport can reach the Olympic Games. We can agree that Free Style is the most eye-catching, striking, impressive and difficult modality of Street Workout, but from there to being the whole Street Workout there is a wide stretch and anyone with ignorance could say that they are simple pirouettes and that in a circus they do them at a greater height.

_{Limiting Street Workout is hurting the whole movement and hurting people who need help.}

Lastly, it is possible to infer that this issue of "the real Street Workout" is nothing more than a call for attention from someone who has mastered his body, but not his mind. It seems to be a fruitless effort to attract attention and try to stand out, to show that one is special in some way that satisfies one's own expectations. Someone who claims this surely practices Free Style and considers that this is the only thing that makes them special, completely ignoring the value they have as a person and as a member of the community and ignoring and disregarding in turn the value of the efforts of others in the other modalities, even without realizing it. Holding this position is therefore unconscious and corrosive to Street Workout, because yes, flying on the bars is great and impressive, but knowing how to land and put your feet on the ground is what closes a combo with a flourish.
