Come vi avevo già accennato nella presentazione, una delle mie passioni è quella per i viaggi, la cosa che non vi ho detto invece, è che mi piacciono (come credo a tutti) quelli low-cost.

Sono solita considerare i miei soldi come una funzione in termini di due variabili: il tempo che ho impiegato (o impiegherò) a guadagnarli, e i viaggi che mi potrei permettere con quella cifra. I vestiti e gli aperitivi non rientrano nella lista delle mie priorità, e la consapevolezza che rinunciando a qualche spritz ci si possa permettere un biglietto del treno, dell’aereo o semplicemente un pieno alla macchina, mi rende impossibile stare ferma negli stessi posti per lunghi periodi e spegnere l’ardente desiderio di partire che è in me: i tedeschi direbbero che soffro della sindrome di “wanderlust”

Questa volta ho voluto sfruttare il 25 aprile per concedermi una fuga nella romantica Venezia, dove sono stata ospite di una mia amica che mi ha fatto conoscere due “gioielli” di cui vi parlerò più tardi nel post.

As I already mentioned in my introduction, one of my passions is that for travels, but the thing I have not said, is that I particularly like (as everyone, I think) the low-cost ones. I’m used to thinking about my money as a function in terms of two variables: the time I spent (or I will spend) earning it, and the travels I could afford with that amount. Clothes and appetizers are not in my priority list and being aware that giving up some cocktails I can afford a train/airplane ticket, makes me impossible to stay in the same places for long periods and stop my burning desire to leave: German people would say I suffer from the Wanderlust syndrome.

This time I decided to take advantage of the 25 of April, which is Italy’s Liberation Day, to enjoy a trip in the romantic Venice, where I was hosted by a friend who made me discover two “jewels” I will speak about later in this post.

Nonostante abbia visitato la città in altre occasioni, mi risulta davvero difficile non rimanerne affascinata ogni volta, perché a Venezia ci si sente come un bambino in un negozio di giocattoli, sopraffatti dalle emozioni, dalla voglia di esplorare, e in particolare dalla felice consapevolezza che non importa in quale calle ci si addentrerà o quale piccolo ponte ci capiterà di attraversare: ovunque si scoprono angoli incantevoli e pittoreschi, degni di essere ammirati.

La storia della città risale a migliaia di anni fa, ma in particolare durante le invasioni barbariche del quinto secolo molte persone fuggirono nella laguna, in cui potevano essere meglio protetti, e incominciarono ad abitarla in modo sempre più stabile. Chissà se quei “rifugiati” avrebbero creduto che stavano calpestando le future fondamenta di una delle città più conosciute al mondo.

Tornando al presente, è difficile non notare come proprio questa popolarità le abbia causato innumerevoli problemi, come dimostrano la manifestazione “anti turisti” dei residenti avvenuta nel 2017, e il recente articolo della Cnn, responsabile della sua inclusione tra “le 12 mete da evitare nel 2018” a causa del sovraffollamento, proponendo al suo posto l’alternativa francese di Annecy.

Venendo da una terra, la riviera romagnola, che ha costruito la sua ricchezza attraverso il turismo, a volte mi chiedo come quest’ultimo possa costituire una minaccia così pericolosa, ma la risposta in questo caso è semplice: il centro di Venezia è composto da un centinaio di piccole isole e non è possibile, come siamo soliti fare qui, costruire altri alberghi, altri ristoranti, altre infrastrutture, resta solo da attuare un piano per una migliore distribuzione degli arrivi nel corso dell’anno. Il sindaco pare inoltre aver trovato una soluzione per i giorni di maggiore affluenza, infatti proprio mentre ero lì ho sentito per la prima volta la notizia che sarebbero stati apposti dei tornelli in grado di bloccare gli ingressi ad una certa soglia.

Seppur ritengo la misura in casi estremi necessaria, non posso fare a meno di immaginarmi le facce sconcertate di tutti quei turisti, in particolare i giapponesi e i cinesi che ho visto intenti a scattare foto a ogni particolare della città, se venissero fermati all’arrivo con la notizia che dopo le tante ore di viaggio, non potranno avere accesso al centro storico.

Despite I visited the city in other occasions, it is really difficult to me not to be fascinated by it every time, because in Venice you feel like a child in a toys shop, overwhelmed with excitement, with the will to explore, and in particular with the happy awareness that it does not matter which lane you will enter or which bridge you will cross: anywhere you will discover enchanting and picturesque spots, worthy of admiration. The story of the city dates back thousands of years ago, but it was during the Barbarian invasions of the fifth century that many people running away from them found protection in the lagoon and started living there in a more stable way. Who knows if those “refugees” would have believed that they were walking on the future foundations of one of the most famous cities of the world.

Coming back to the present, it is difficult not to notice how it is this popularity that caused it so many problems, as evidenced by the “anti- tourists” protest by residents, occurred in 2017, and the recent Cnn article, which enlists it among the “12 places you shouldn’t travel to in 2018” because of overcrowding, and propose as an alternative Annecy, in France. It is sometimes hard for me to understand how tourism can pose such a big threat, given that it should be something that makes the destinations richer, but in this case we have to consider that the centre of Venice is composed by about a hundred little islands, and it is obviously not possible to increase the number of hotels, restaurants, infrastructures above a certain threshold. The best way to solve this problem would be to develop off-season tourism, but it seems that the mayor has found a solution for these days of mass tourism: turnstiles that can stop the flow of people. Even if I consider this as a necessary measure in some cases, I cannot help imagining the shocked faces of tourists if someone said them at their arrival that it is not possible to enter the city centre.

Passiamo però ai consigli di viaggio…

Per quanto riguarda l’itinerario, è noto che i punti principali come le Basiliche di San Marco e di Santa Maria della Salute, il ponte di Rialto e dei Sospiri (e tanti altri) sono visitabili in una giornata, se dotati di forza di volontà e intensa voglia di camminare, ma in questo caso bisognerà probabilmente abbandonare l’idea di visitare anche Murano e Burano, considerando che il tragitto in vaporetto impiega circa 30 minuti per la prima e 50 per la seconda meta. Vorrei suggerirvi però di inserire nel vostro percorso due luoghi che nonostante la loro straordinaria particolarità non sono troppo conosciuti, ma che hanno lasciato in me un segno indelebile (e per ultimo, ma non per importanza, sono gratis):

Il primo è la “libreria acqua alta”, dove ci si immerge in un mondo unico nel suo genere, in cui libri nuovi e usati sono sistemati nei modi più bizzarri, come ad esempio dentro a delle vasche da bagno, delle gondole, o a formare dei gradini conducenti ad uno scorcio sui canali;

But let’s now talk about travel tips…

For what concerns the itinerary, it is well known that it is possible to visit the highlights such as the San Marco and Santa Maria della Salute Cathedrals, Rialto bridge and many others in just one day, but only if you have will power and you feel like walking. In this case, you will have to give up the idea of going also to the two famous islands Murano and Burano, because the time to reach them is 30 minutes for the former and 50 for the latter.

I want to suggest you to include in your trip two locations that despite their extraordinary particularity are not too famous and left an indelible mark on me ( and last but not least, they are free):

The first one is the “libreria acqua alta”, literally “high water library”, where you will experience a unique world, where old and new books are placed in the most bizarre places and ways, such as inside bathtubs and gondole (the typical Venetian boat), or forming a book step climb;

Il secondo è la terrazza sopra il centro commerciale “Fondaco dei Tedeschi”. L’imponente edificio, costruito nel Quattrocento, negli ultimi anni è diventato un punto fermo per gli amanti dello shopping di lusso, ma come vi ho accennato questo non fa propriamente parte dei miei interessi. Ho apprezzato la maestosità e la bellezza del palazzo, senza dubbio degni di una visita, ma la vera sorpresa si trova all’ultimo piano: salendo si ha accesso all’enorme terrazza, che si affaccia direttamente sul ponte di Rialto e dalla quale si può ammirare gran parte del centro storico da una prospettiva senza dubbio mozzafiato.

The second one is the terrace of the shopping mall “Fondaco dei Tedeschi”. The imposing building, erected in the fourth century has become the right place for luxury shopper lovers in the last few years, but in this case I want to talk about the real reason why it deserves a visit in my opinion: reaching the top floor, you will have access to a wide terrace overlooking the Rialto bridge and from which you will be able admire the old town from another perspective.
