Looking back at the photos from my hiking trip with my sister, I can hardly believe how fast time has flown! “Can you believe it’s almost been a month?” Since then, I've been proud to keep up my goal of hiking at least once a month, and I’m really excited to continue this adventure. When we finally reached the top of Mt. Takatori and saw that triangular marker, I felt on top of Mr. Takatori! Yay, we made it! We decided to enjoy our lunch there, surrounded by the beautiful ruins of Takatori Castle, which make a lovely place. And guess what? Out of nowhere, it started snowing at the summit! It was such a fun surprise and showed us just how quickly the weather can change up there. 姉と一緒に行ったハイキングの写真を見返していると、「もう１カ月近く時間が経過したの？」と時間の経過の早さにびっくりさせられます。あれから、１っか月に一回は必ずハイキングに行くという自分に課した目標は達成できているので、それは本当に続けていきたいと思っています。高取山の頂上の三角地点を確認し、登頂したと実感しました。高取城跡にある本丸跡には大きな広場として整備されていて、そこで昼ご飯を食べることにしました。頂上ではなんと雪が降り始め、頂上では天候の移り変わりの速さにびっくりしました。

Over lunch the other day, my sis and I were sharing how important it is for both of us to stay healthy so we can really enjoy life. I’ve been noticing that my physical fitness has been slipping a bit, and I felt it was time to focus on maintaining my strength and muscle tone. That’s when my sister invited me to join a hiking group, and I couldn’t be happier that she did! I've found that I’m much more likely to go hiking if I have my friends with me since I wouldn’t want to go on my own. And you know what? Winter hiking is a blast! There’s something so refreshing about it—especially when you warm up with a cup of hot tea after being out in the snow. It really reminded me how important it is to take the time to enjoy nature like this! 昼ご飯を食べながら、お互いに健康を維持しながら元気に人生を過ごせるようにしたいねぇという話をしていました。この頃、私事なのですが、体力の低下を自分でも気づくようになってきて、しっかりと体力維持と筋力維持をしないといけないと感じ始めていました。その時に姉が一緒にハイキングサークルの誘ってくれ、本当によかったなぁと感じています。自分ではなかなか一人で行かないハイキングもサークルのメンバーと一緒だったら行こうかなぁという気になるのも事実です。雪がちらつく中、温かい紅茶を飲むと体がぽかぽかしてきて冬のハイキングも楽しいなと感じました。このように自然を感じる時間を持つことの大切さを改めて感じました。

After we finished our meal, it was time to head back down the mountain. I was a little worried because my knees usually hurt when going downhill, but surprisingly, I wasn't feeling much pain this time! In fact, it seemed like my knee discomfort was getting better as my muscles around them grew stronger, even if just a bit. As we made our way down, we stumbled upon an amazing rock sculpture shaped like a monkey, known as “Monkey Rock.” This incredible piece was crafted by ancient Japanese artists over 1,000 years ago! When they were building Takatori Castle, they found this rock from the Kofun period, and now those pieces are proudly displayed along the trail. It’s fascinating to think about how long this area has been inhabited, and you can really feel the history of the town that has flourished for so many years! 食事を終えて下山の準備を進めました。下山の時に膝が痛くなるので少し心配をしていたのですが、この時はさほど膝の痛みも感じることはなく少しづつではあっても膝回りの筋肉がついてきて膝の痛みも軽減してきたのかなと感じていました。下山中に出会った、「猿岩」という大岩を猿の形に掘った彫刻がありました。この彫刻はなんと１０００年以上前に古代日本人によって作成されたもので、古墳時代の遺構が高取城建築時に見つかりその後も高取城の下山道に設置しているものでした。この地域は昔から人が住んでいる地域で、昔から栄えている町なのかと時代を感じることが出来ました。

On our way down the mountain, we discovered this amazing observatory where we could take in the entire view of Nara! It was absolutely beautiful, and we could even spot the buildings of Osaka way off in the distance. I was pleasantly surprised to see Mt. Hiei, too, with Lake Biwa just beyond it. The mountains of the Kansai region looked fantastic! Hiking really gives you such a wonderful panoramic view, and I think that’s what makes me love it so much. 下山途中に奈良を一望できる展望台がありました。素晴らしい眺望で、遠くは大阪のビル街も見えました。びっくりしたのが、遠くは比叡山も見えていて、比叡山を超えると琵琶湖があります。近畿一円の山々が見えて本当に美しい眺望でした。ハイキングはこの様な景色を一望出来て、やっぱりそれがハイキングにはまってしまう原因だと思います。

The path down the mountain leads to a lovely "satoyama", a beautiful area nestled between mountains and villages. Unfortunately, these charming landscapes are disappearing quickly these days. But in Takatori, a few satoyama still remain, and I felt so lucky to experience one of them! While my sister and I strolled through the satoyama, we chatted about how challenging it must be to live in such a place. At the same time, the scenery brought back fantastic memories of visiting my grandparents’ house in the Japanese countryside. Those were such special times! 下山道を進むときれいな里山にでます。この頃は里山と言われる山と里の間に出来た里山がどんどんなくなっているようです。高取では里山が少し残っていました。このような里山の風景にまだ触れることが出来て嬉しくなりました。きっと住むのは大変だろうなぁと姉と話しながら里山を歩いていたのですが、それにしても里山の景色は日本の田舎の風景で子供の頃、祖父母の家に遊びに行った時の思い出もふつふつと思い出しました。なんとも素敵な思い出です。

The nearest station was Kashihara Shrine Station, where I caught my train back to Osaka. As I left, I couldn't help but reflect on Kashihara Shrine, which honors the founding emperor of Japan, Emperor Jinmu.
