After more than a year of playing intermittently on my Nintendo Switch, I finally finished the story of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. I bought the game and started playing it two weeks after its release in May 2023. However, due to the responsibilities of adult life, I could only dedicate time to it sporadically. The beginning is quite similar—you start in a tutorial area where you get used to the new abilities. Then, you're set loose in a vast open world with one main mission: rescue Princess Zelda. Among the new features in TotK, the Sky Islands stand out, adding a new dimension to Hyrule. These islands are filled with secrets, like hidden chests, enemies, and some shrines. From these islands, you can jump to the surface, where more shrines and towers await, which you need to activate to unlock the map. Make sure you have the paraglider when jumping, because if you don’t, you’ll need to land in water. At the moment, I can’t recall exactly when or how you obtain the paraglider... From the surface, you can descend into the Depths, accessible by jumping into chasms surrounded by a malevolent aura. It’s a dark and entirely new area, full of aggressive enemies. To make progress, you have to activate Lightroots that illuminate your path and give you a brief respite from the constant damage caused by the aura. This damage can only be healed on the surface or by reaching one of these Lightroots. En el subsuelo, también encontrarás coliseos donde te enfrentarás a oleadas de enemigos para obtener como recompensa un cofre con alguna vestimenta interesante.

As you explore Hyrule and complete missions, you’ll encounter plenty of enemies—don’t underestimate them, especially at the beginning when all you have is a stick as a weapon. Combat is quite similar to BotW. You use a sword, shield, and bow for ranged attacks. The weapon durability system is still in place; swords break after several uses, and shields after a few hits, so gather all the weapons you can find to avoid being left defenseless. You’ll eventually reach a point where you’ll think twice before using your best weapons to avoid wearing them out. I actually prefer to break the weaker ones and save the powerful ones for bosses. Additionally, the new weapons you can create with the items you find—like a sword combined with a rock—add a special strategic touch to the combat. >Mientras exploras Hyrule y completas misiones, te vas a topar con montón de enemigos, no los subestimes, especialmente al principio que no tienes más que un palo como arma. The key ability in TotK is Ultrahand. It allows you to lift and combine objects, making it essential for solving puzzles and offering a wide range of solutions, like building bridges or vehicles. There's also the Ascend ability, which lets you move vertically through objects, and Recall, which rewinds objects (I haven’t fully mastered this one yet). If you're not familiar with open-world games, you might feel a bit overwhelmed at first, but as you progress and grasp the dynamics, it becomes very enjoyable. If you’ve played other The Legend of Zelda games, the elemental temples might be a bit underwhelming; while they do have interesting puzzles, they’re not as deep or complex as in previous entries. However, I found the final boss battles to be very entertaining. The main story’s ending is impressive, featuring a multi-stage showdown against Ganondorf that brings the adventure to an epic close. > Si no estás acostumbrado a los juegos de mundo abierto, tal vez te abrumes al inicio con este juego, pero conforme avanzas y entiendes las dinámicas se vuelve muy entretenido. There is one downside, though: with the improved graphics and added content, the Switch gets pushed to its limits, sometimes causing brief moments of slowdown. But despite this, the positives stand out, and in my opinion, Tears of the Kingdom definitely surpasses Breath of the Wild. They refreshed the gameplay and raised the bar even higher. I still have some things left to complete, but I think it’s time to move on to another game. I’ll try to finish what’s left when I have more time. What do you think about this game?
