It felt like an earthquake. At least how John imagined an earthquake to feel like.

There was a rumble, and the crockery in the cupboards on the wall rattled, as if trying to free themselves from their cupboardy prison.

John himself felt unusual as though the trembling was somehow coming from him. He took a deep breath, staying still in his seat until the feelings had past.

Carol was looking at him, her cigarette in her hand. She flicked the ash onto the plate in front of her - a habit John despised - and smiled.

"I knew it was you," she said, her voice calm. "You have a power, don't you. Remind me," she said, screwing the cigarette butt into the remains of an egg white. "Never to really upset you."

...

I had a bad day yesterday (nothing serious, just the usual self doubts and artistic internal torments, that I am sure you are all familiar with). I'd like to thank the people who popped by, some with words of encouragement, and some by silently upvoting something I had told you not to read! I had a real nice surprise too from the lovely folk at @isleofwrite, so I think today is going to be a better day. Love and thanks to you all. x

The photo, by the way, is a picture I took a few days ago as dusk approached.
