My Favorite TV Series (Last Few Years)

I am a big fan of TV series. And I am definitely a binge watcher. So I thought I would share my favorite TV series I’ve seen in the past few years. This does not include my all time favorite Sherlock and I don't know why, I just feel like it deserves a mention on its own because it takes a special place in my heart. Sherlock Holmes is also my favorite character in any shape or form - books, television, film.

Some of the TV series I’ve watched but I won’t put on the list are:

Breaking Bad – even though I liked it, I never really watched it with my 100% attention and I am someone who’s always watching series/movies with most of my focus. I’m not someone who’s going to clean or do another chore, playing something in the background. But that’s how I mostly watched Breaking Bad. And I don’t really have a desire to watch it again with all my attention.

The Walking Dead – I still watch this but I started when season 4 or 5 came out and just picked it up from there. At this point I have mixed feelings about this one, I kind of can’t stop watching it but at the same time I think it should come close to an end.

How To Get Away With Murder – Another one I think it should end soon, lol. At this point it’s just unnecessary exaggeration, in my opinion. But again, I watched it from the beginning so I’ll follow until the end, I guess.

Stranger Things – The last season wasn’t really my favorite but it’s still a good one to watch. I hope next season will be interesting. In general, I liked the story and the young, talented actors. Also, the time where the story takes place is something I really liked.

Pretty Little Liars – I liked it at the beginning, the story was interesting, at least all the mystery parts, there was quite a bit of love stories involved but nothing I couldn’t really handle, lol. But the end ruined it all for me which was really annoying since I think the story had a potential for a much better ending.

Sex and the city – This was recommended, to say the least, by two of my best friends. They would always reference parts from the series and say it is so relatable. When I say recommended, I think more of ‘they wouldn’t leave me alone until I watch the damn series’ haha. So I did it and yeah, there were some parts I could also relate to but for me it was too much love drama, fancy shoes and dresses involved. Not my jam.

Now, I want to present to you my favorite shows, which definitely all have some things in common – mystery, crime, action, blood, drama , murder… It is just my “cup of tea” and something I really enjoy watching. I love detectives, solving mysteries, a little bit of darkness, getting into people’s head (both “good guys” and “bad guys”), difficult life stories and situations…

TOP 12 (my OCD is cringing right now with this number, 10 would be much better but oh well...)

1. Vikings – probably my all time favorite TV show after Sherlock. I love that it is based on real life people but of course, they changed a lot of it for the sake of the show. There’s so many interesting, complex characters and you can really follow their development through the show. My favorite is Floki, probably because he has this weirdo, unique personality and of course, his signature laughter is another specific part of his character. I also love Ragnar and Lagertha, their rise and fall and their love story with all the ups and downs (no happy ending).

2. La casa de papel – oh boy, what can I say about this one? Spanish television/film is something that always blows me away. I’ve never seen anything similar to La casa de papel when it comes to the story/idea and the message it carries. And the fact there’s Serbian actors and language in the series made me laugh but also made me proud for some reason, haha. I still don’t have a favorite character and I don’t think I ever will. New season is coming in April and I cannot wait! It's one of those that keeps you on the edge of the seat.

3. Game of thrones – of course, I have to mention this one as I really got into the story with passion! There was a lot of talk online about the ending, which for me it was okay, I wasn’t that mad at it but I definitely think it was a good decision to end the show, it they continued I think they would ruin it completely. Favorite character – Tyrion Lannister! Wise, smart, knows how to get away with pretty much any situation, sarcastic and unique, loves wine.

4. Elementary – another Sherlock Holmes on my list with a little bit of a twist which I had doubts about at first but it turned out to be a well done change to the original story. Of course, both Sherlock and Elementary are done in the modern age but I think that the adaptation of both was great. What I like in Elementary is the bond Sherlock and his partner Joan Watson have.

5. Big little lies – based on a novel, which I also really liked, comes a story of five women, each with her own lifestyle, problems, struggles but bond by a certain event that affected all of their lives. It covers a lot of different and difficult life situations – domestic violence, love affairs, sexual abuse and more. The actresses did such a good job with their characters.

6. Patrick Melrose – Amazing performance by Benedict Cumberbatch comes in TV mini series of 5 episodes. A story of a man who struggles with addiction and other problems, how it affects his family life and being a father and it also goes back to his own childhood and abuse father…

7. Luther – I thought this was going to be just another detective – criminal story but there was something different about this one. The cases they came up with were somehow different and interesting and I liked seeing Idris Elba in this role, it really suits him.

8. Killing Eve – Another one where I didn’t have many expectations but surprised me in a good way. I haven’t seen Jodie Comer before this one but her performance was so good. Acting, accents – she really nailed it! I like the creepy, fearless side of her character.

9. You – This one had me tripping, haha! After watching this, you might spend some time being suspicious about everyone you meet and you might think about what you post on Social media. I liked season two more that season one and I hope season three won’t disappoint.

10. The Punisher - What a badass series! This one made me wanna learn some skills and kick some bad guys butt, haha. I also think they chose the perfect actor to play the Punisher. Too bad it ended after only two seasons, I would definitely love to see more.

11. El Barco - El Barco (The Ship) is a bit older compared to most of the TV series on this top 12 list and it was recommended by a friend of mine. Since I like Mario Casas I thought I would give it a try. I ended up being obsessed with it and I spent days watching it. Again, the idea of the show is something I’ve never seen before and even though there’s so many unrealistic situations and a bit of cheesy love drama, it was definitely worth watching. This TV series also had one of my favorite characters in the entire television/film – Burbuja (Bubble). This actor is something else. I have no idea how he managed to get into this character and towards the end of the show, it really shows how amazing he is. I replayed that one scene so many times and it still blows me away.

12. Elite - (another Spanish one) follows three working class students who get transferred to an elite, rich kids school. At the school party one of the (elite) students gets killed and the story gets deeper into the personal stories, love affairs, family relationships but it also touches on problems like discrimination (based on sexuality, religion, social status…), experimenting with drugs, living with HIV… all while trying to figure out who was the murderer.

I guess that’s it! I hope I haven’t missed any TV show worth mentioning and writing this post made me realize how much time I’ve spent invested in these stories and characters. But that’s fine since it’s one of my favorite unwind “activities”. Also, watching some of these during the hard times (especially heart-breaks) helped me a lot for some reason. Maybe because I get so invested in it, I forget my own problems and sometimes makes them less “big of a deal” once you see what someone is possibly going through (even if it’s a fictional character). I don’t know if that makes sense at all but I hope you know what I mean.

What kind of series you like to watch? If you even like to watch any, haha. I think you can get a picture of what kind of series I like, so based on that, if you have any recommendations, leave them in the comments below. You can also share your opinion on any of these. I look forward to chat with you about this topic! :)
