This is something you don’t often see in gaming, at least on consoles. Square Enix is giving owners of Dragon Quest X on the Nintendo Wii a free upgrade to the Nintendo Switch edition. This is wild because console games are usually tied to the console they were made for and you are required to buy the game on newer hardware if you wanted to continue playing it. Sure, we had backwards compatibility, off and on, for a decade or two now but that is different.
Later this year Dragon Quest X will receive an update to version 4.0 which marks the end of support for the Nintendo Wii edition. The free upgrade will be made available as a download code. If you prefer a physical copy of Dragon Quest X for the Nintendo Switch then you will need to purchase another copy.
This update to version 4.0 will not affect the Nintendo Wii U version of Dragon Quest X. Later this year Dragon Quest X will receive an update to version 4.0 which marks the end of support for the Nintendo Wii edition.
By giving Nintendo Wii owners of Dragon Quest X a free upgrade to the Nintendo Switch edition they are giving away a copy of the game. Sure, this is great news for fans but probably something that is going to be an extremely isolated event. I don’t see other companies following suit (Nintendo for example).
