Post-Brexit guitars

The Guardian has reported on how Brexit will affect the price of guitars. Of course it will affect lots of other imports too. Fender and Gibson still have a special place in the hearts of many players. I don't own any of either and my only electric for many years is made in the UK. I think British players should be looking closer to home where they can find some great instruments. A Gibson Les Paul costs from around £2000 and you can get something special for that from various UK builders.

My guitar was made by Gordon Smith Guitars from the north of England. They have been around for many years producing guitars that you can customise to your requirements for a reasonable price.

Gordon Smith

I've not played one from Crimon Guitars, but I've followed his builds for a while on-line. He builds unique guitars with some great designs. His basic range starts at £800, but you can pay a lot more for a full custom and get exactly what you want.

I saw some guitars by James Collins at a show. They are based on a Les Paul, but are just beautiful and a bit different for the same sort of money. At the same show I saw guitars by lots of other small UK companies and I would be talking to a few of them if I had the money to spend.

I'm not a great one for particular brands and I will go for whatever gives the best blend of features, quality and value. I did buy a US guitar last year, but it was a custom build by a one man operation called Benford Guitars. I'd seen and played enough of his work to know he could do a good job and I got a unique Telecaster for the price of something off the peg from Fender.

Don't be a slave to the big brands and support local companies.
