Disclosure: Amethyst is my birthstone and has always been one of my favorite stones.
Amethyst is 7 on the mohs scale of mineral hardness. It is a kind of quartz which can occur in any purplish shade or tint. According to Wikipedia, "Green amethyst" isn't actually an amethyst. In general, the darker colors are the most prized.
Amethysts are often found on the inside of a geode. They can be found all over the world, but some of the largest producers of amethyst are Brazil and Uruguay.
