“Enchapado (a) a la antigua” es un dicho utilizado aquí en Venezuela para referirnos a personas que se han quedado en el tiempo, en el sentido de que su forma de comprender la realidad no es acorde con el ritmo de los cambios modernos, y por eso, se estacionan en una forma de ser o estilo de hacer las cosas que ya se consideran anticuadas.

Al recordar esta frase y aplicarla concretamente a la tecnología que en el mundo de hoy es una de las realidades que está evolucionando a pasos gigantescos. Voy a partir de la impresión que causó en mí un artículo que leí hace tiempo. El mismo se titula, “Por qué el software se está comiendo al mundo”, es de Marc Andreessen, cofundador de dos de los primeros navegadores web, Mosaic y Netscape.

"Old-fashioned veneer" is a saying used here in Venezuela to refer to people who have stayed in time, in the sense that their way of understanding reality is not in accordance with the rhythm of modern changes, and therefore, they park themselves in a way of being or style of doing things that are already considered old-fashioned.

By remembering this phrase and applying it concretely to technology, which in today's world is one of the realities that is evolving in gigantic steps. I will start from the impression made on me by an article I read some time ago. It is entitled, "Why Software is Eating the World", by Marc Andreessen, co-founder of two of the first web browsers, Mosaic and Netscape.

El autor hace un análisis de como la tecnología de la computación, a través sus programas, equipos y nuevas industrias, ha transformado varios sectores de la sociedad, impulsando un cambio positivo en cuanto a la mejora en la calidad de los servicios ofrecidos; El artículo se centra en el aspecto económico, ya que lo que más llamaba la atención en ese entonces - ¡aunque también hoy! - era el rápido crecimiento financiero de las industrias que estaban promoviendo este tipo de cambio: Amazon, Google, Facebook, etc.

Pensemos en cómo ciertamente los servicios ofrecidos por industrias que asumen la tecnología como un área importante para ser competente en el mundo de hoy, son servicios que evidentemente proporcionan mayor satisfacción y calidad a los usuarios, ya que – por ejemplo – facilitan el acceso a sus productos de manera on line. Por poner sólo un caso, cualquiera puede hoy adquirir un libro de manera virtual por Amazon, ya que hasta estos mismos son hoy digitales (aunque también, evidentemente, si quieres puedes adquirirlo en físico).

The author analyses how computer technology, through its programs, equipment and new industries, has transformed various sectors of society, driving positive change in terms of improving the quality of services offered; the article focuses on the economic aspect, since what attracted most attention then - but also today! - was the rapid financial growth of the industries that were promoting this type of change: Amazon, Google, Facebook, etc.

Let's think about how certainly the services offered by industries that assume technology as an important area to be competent in today's world, are services that evidently provide more satisfaction and quality to users, since - for example - they facilitate the access to their products online. To put only one case, anyone can today acquire a book virtually through Amazon, since even these are now digital (although also, obviously, if you want you can acquire it physically).

Este impulso también viene favorecido gracias a que ya hoy, gran parte de las personas del mundo tiene acceso a internet o, por lo menos, conocen a alguien que lo tenga. Un internet al alcance de la mano es hoy, de hecho, posible con los teléfonos inteligentes que aproximadamente 4770 mil millones de personas en todo el mundo poseen, un 65% de la población mundial, según un estudio del año 2016, que cito abajo en las fuentes. ¿Te puedes imaginar a cuánto ha ascendido hoy este porcentaje?

Con todo este panorama, y partiendo del artículo citado, me podrán comprender el título y sentido de este post, ya que si queremos estar en sintonía con los avances del mundo y, aprovechar las bondades y beneficios de los mismos, no podemos cerrarnos al uso y provecho de las herramientas que la tecnología nos brinda hoy.

Sería contraproducente para la persona que así lo haga, pues, prácticamente no hay sector o campo de la vida que no haya sido alcanzado de una u otra manera por lo que a mí me gusta llamarle revolución tecnológica o digital, ya que así como aquélla revolución industrial del siglo XIX, ésta está destinada a cambiar la forma en que se hacen muchas cosas, de hecho ya la está cambiando, desde la manera de acceder a la información hasta la manera de comunicarnos y muchas áreas más.

With all this panorama, and starting from the quoted article, you can understand the title and meaning of this post, since if we want to be in tune with the world's advances and take advantage of their benefits, we cannot close ourselves to the use and benefit of the tools that technology offers us today.

It would be counterproductive for the person who does so, because there is practically no sector or field of life that has not been reached in one way or another by what I like to call the technological or digital revolution, because just like that industrial revolution of the nineteenth century, this one is destined to change the way many things are done, in fact it is already changing it, from the way we access information to the way we communicate and many other areas.

Ahora bien, no quiero terminar sin referirme a algo que considero de vital importancia en todo esto bueno que nos trae la tecnología, el internet, el software, el blockchain y todo lo que se le relacione. Y es que lo que va a hacer que toda esta maravillosa evolución del mundo moderno impacte positivamente al ser humano vamos a ser precisamente cada uno de nosotros, sobretodo con el uso adecuado que le demos a cada una de estas herramientas tecnológicas.

Esto quiere decir para mí que como lo que somos eso es lo que reflejamos en nuestras acciones, por lo tanto, nuestro accionar en esta área de la tecnología se verá favorecido en la medida que somos mejores personas.

Así pues, aunque no hay que estar “enchapado a la antigua” no podemos perder nuestra esencia como seres humanos ya que, citando ahora al famoso Shakespeare con su “Ser o no ser, esa es la cuestión”, el compromiso es asumir con responsabilidad y valentía los retos del mundo tecnológico de hoy en pro de crear una sociedad más fraterna, solidaria, íntegra, de progreso en todos los aspectos y, en definitiva, más humana y no sólo virtualizada o tecnologizada. ¿Asumimos juntos este compromiso?

Now, I do not want to finish without referring to something that I consider of vital importance in all this good that technology, the Internet, software, blockchain and everything related to it brings us. And it is that what will make all this wonderful evolution of the modern world positively impact the human being will be precisely each of us, especially with the proper use we give to each of these technological tools.

This means for me that since what we are is what we reflect in our actions, therefore, our actions in this area of technology will be favored to the extent that we are better people.

Therefore, although we must not be "old-fashioned" we cannot lose our essence as human beings since, to quote now the famous Shakespeare with his "To be or not to be, that is the question", the commitment is to take on with responsibility and courage the challenges of today's technological world in order to create a more fraternal, supportive, integral society, one that is progressive in all aspects and, in short, more humane and not just virtualized or technologized.
