Wednesday Walk: Mount Vernon

I recently posted George Washington's Mount Vernon which I showed the inside of the house.

Now I would like to take you on a walk around the outside.

Gardens

I went at the end of April and it was a wonderful spring day and the gardens were beautiful.

The gardeners even got creative and spelled out George Washington with the vegetables!

The upper (formal) garden

The lower (kitchen) garden

The most interesting thing was the use of the apple and other fruit trees as an organic fence in the garden.

Out buildings

I took pictures of a few of the buildings including the stable, kitchen and smokehouse.

Potomac River

It is a beautiful mansion overlooking the Potomac River.

The grounds

Here is a map of the property. It is 500 acres (200 ha).

So many paths!

After taking a tour of the house I walked around for a couple of hours and saw the dock, the grave sites and the animals.

Burial area

Both the Washington's and slaves had burial areas in close proximity.

The dock

It is a working dock with boats leaving on regular basis.

They also have benches by the beach if you want to relax next to the water.

The animals

I had to stop and get a picture of the black faced sheep. They were my mom's favorite!

It was a gorgeous spring day to see this historic home and plantation.
