Hello to my dear Hive community, I hope you had a nice Christmas Eve in the company of your loved ones and above all that in the remainder of the year 2021 blessings, health, love and money multiply in your lives of course.
Taking advantage of this holiday season I started to search the catalog of platforms that I have at my disposal for a Christmas movie to enjoy now that I am living in another city and I could not spend Christmas Eve with my family. Although several weeks ago Netflix had recommended me a title that immediately caught my attention because I knew the way the plot was going.
The truth is that I just let myself go and I set out to watch this movie that I occasionally bring as an entry to the contest that is promoting my dear community of Movies and TV shows in which we are asked to talk about our favorite Christmas movies and taking advantage that I have time to make a writing that is at least promising I decided to participate after being invited several times to join.
There are many romantic movies, almost all of them follow the same plot but over time the genre has lost some of the magic it used to offer. Today there are few titles that make me look at the screen, only a few classics are available on streaming platforms and many others are repeated on cable channels.
Hola a mi querida comunidad de Hive, espero que hayan pasado una bonita noche buena en compañía de sus seres queridos y sobre todo que en lo que queda del año 2021 se multipliquen en sus vidas las bendiciones, salud, amor y el dinero por supuesto.
Aprovechando estas fiestas me puse a buscar en el catálogo de plataformas que tengo a mi disposición una película de navidad la cual disfrutar ahora que estoy viviendo en otra ciudad y no pude pasar la noche buena con mi familia. Aunque hace varias semanas Netflix me había recomendado un título que de inmediato llamo mi atención por qué sabía el camino que seguía la trama.
Lo cierto es que solo me deje llevar y me dispuse a ver esta película que ocasionalmente traigo como entrada al concurso que está promoviendo mi querida comunidad de Movies and TV shows en el cual nos piden a hablar acerca de nuestras películas navideñas favoritas y aprovechando que tengo tiempo de realizar un escrito que al menos sea prometedor decidí participar después de ser invitado varias veces a unirme.
Películas románticas muchas, casi todas siguen el mismo argumento pero con el tiempo el género ha perdido un poco esa magia que antes brindaba. Hoy son contados los títulos que me hagan mirar la pantalla, solo unos cuantos clásicos están disponibles en las plataformas de streaming y otros tantos son repetidos en los canales de cable.
There is almost nothing left of those nineties productions that made me dream so much, but if we talk about Christmas movies we fall even shorter. There are few that have managed to get my attention, I remember Home Alone with great affection for example, but when romance meets Christmas the formula is usually perfect.
This is the case of this wonderful piece called Single all the way movie released earlier this month by Netflix, which was directed by Michael Mayer who among so many other titles has to his credit American Idiot (2016) Atlantis (2017) and who now returns with a LGBTQI+ Christmas movie yes, you read that right a queer movie for Christmas.
That fact mainly caught my attention, not many films of this type that I know of are Christmas so my demands and expectations were higher than ever. With a cast of those who make you dream of a good product among which we could mention Michael Urie famous for participating in productions like Ugly Betty and Modern Family, Luke Macfarlane who surprised me to learn that he has a long history of participation in Christmas movies, the gorgeous Philemon Chambers making his acting debut, Kathy Najimy famous for her participation in iconic films such as Sister Act or Hocus Pocus and last but not least we have the successful participation of the experienced comic actress Jennifer Coolidge who has in her filmography titles such as American Pie and 2 Broke Girls.
The truth is that nothing could go wrong, in short we have a great cast with situations and secondary characters that are developed very well as the plot progresses but what is Single all the way about?
Ya casi nada queda de aquellas producciones noventeras que tanto me hacían soñar, pero si hablamos de películas navideñas nos quedamos aún más cortos. Son pocas las que han llegado a obtener mi atención, recuerdo con mucho cariño por ejemplo a Home Alone pero cuando el romance se junta con la navidad la fórmula por lo general es perfecta.
Este es el caso de esta maravillosa pieza llamada Soltero en Navidad película estrenada a principios de este mes por Netflix, la cual fue dirigida por Michael Mayer quien entre otros tantos títulos tiene en su haber a American Idiot (2016) Atlantis (2017) y que ahora regresa con una película navideña LGBTQI+ sí, has leído bien una película queer para navidad.
Ese hecho principalmente llamo mi atención, no son muchas las películas de este tipo que conozca que sean navideñas, así que mis exigencias y expectativas estaban más altas que nunca. Con un elenco de esos que te hacen soñar con un buen producto entre los cuales podríamos mencionar a Michael Urie famoso por participar en producciones como Ugly Betty y Modern Family, Luke Macfarlane quien me sorprendió al saber que tiene un largo historial de participaciones en películas de corte navideño, el guapísimo Philemon Chambers haciendo su debut como actor, Kathy Najimy famosa por participar en películas icónicas como Sister Act o Hocus Pocus y por último pero no menos importante tenemos la acertada participación de la experimentada actriz cómica Jennifer Coolidge que cuenta en su filmografía con títulos como American Pie y 2 Broke Girls.
Lo cierto es que nada podría salir mal, en definitiva tenemos a un gran elenco con situaciones y personajes secundarios que se van desarrollando muy bien a medida que la trama avanza pero de ¿de qué trata Soltero en Navidad?
Synopsis
Peter (Michael Urie) is a successful social media-focused publicist (who has a very heavy boss) specializing in sponsored posts targeting the gay community on Instagram, although our protagonist's true passion is actually plants. But Peter doesn't fare too well in his personal relationships and after believing he had found love, he suffers another disappointment after discovering that his boyfriend was actually married to a woman. With so many tragedies happening in his life, he can't afford to go home for Christmas without a steady partner to introduce to his family.
So she decides to convince her roommate and lifelong best friend Nick (Philemon Chambers) to spend Christmas with her family in New Hampshire and also to (falsely) pass him off as her boyfriend, since Peter is really under a lot of pressure from his family.
However, there is one small detail: Peter's mom Carole (Kathy Najimy) has already set her only son up on a blind date with her gorgeous trainer at James Gym (Luke Macfarlane).
Then the initial plan falls apart, even more so when Nick tired of so many lies tells Peter that he should go on the blind date that his mother has set up for him and give himself a chance to meet someone else. But everything soon changes and Peter decides it's time to go back to his hometown to spend more time with his family and it is there where Nick realizes that he is going to miss him a lot and that he is actually in love with his best friend so he decides to tell Peter especially after learning that the rest of the family is convinced that he is really the perfect man. This is how they set up a plot to keep him from seeing James and getting closer and closer to his best friend.
Sinopsis
Peter (Michael Urie) es un exitoso publicista enfocado en redes sociales (que tiene un jefe muy pesado) especializado en posts patrocinados dirigidos a la comunidad gay en Instagram, aunque la verdadera pasión de nuestro protagonista en realidad son las plantas. Pero a Peter no le va muy bien en sus relaciones personales y luego de creer que había encontrado el amor, sufre otra decepción después de descubrir que su novio en realidad estaba casado con una mujer. Con tantas tragedias pasando en su vida no puede permitirse volver a casa a navidad sin una pareja estable que presentar a su familia.
Es así como decide convencer a su compañero de habitación y mejor amigo de toda la vida Nick (Philemon Chambers) para que pase las navidades en compañía de su familia en New Hampshire y también para (falsamente) hacerlo pasar como su novio, ya que Peter realmente sufre mucha presión por parte de su familia.
Sin embargo hay un pequeño detalle: Carole, la mamá de Peter (Kathy Najimy) ya le ha preparado a su único hijo una cita a ciegas con su guapísimo entrenador en el Gimnasio James (Luke Macfarlane).
Entonces el plan inicial se derrumba, aún más cuando Nick cansado de tantas mentiras le dice a Peter que debería acudir a la cita a ciegas que le ha preparado su madre y darse la oportunidad de conocer a otra persona. Pero todo cambia muy pronto y Peter decide que es hora de volver a su pueblo natal para pasar más tiempo con su familia y es allí donde Nick se da cuenta que lo va a extrañar mucho y que en realidad está enamorado de su mejor amigo asi que decide decírselo a Peter sobre todo después de saber que el resto de la familia está convencida de que él es realmente el hombre perfecto. Es así como arman un complot para no dejar que vea a James y que se acerque cada vez más a su mejor amigo.
My Opinion
The first thing I must say about this movie is that it is enjoyable and above all it is for the whole family despite having a gay couple as protagonists for the first time I think, it is fortunate that they have been so subtle and leave in the background the fact of the sexuality of the protagonists. I never felt any value judgments or discrimination of any kind, the film focuses on how our families play a major role in our happiness.
What pleased me the most was to find a wonderful, empathetic and very close cast that allows the viewer to feel part of a plot excellently well done despite being plagued with the main elements of the genre and I never felt bored, in fact I would say that it is refreshing to find a Christmas story dealing with everyday issues from a different perspective. I also loved the participation of children in the story, they are also protagonists of a film where love is the main character.
The 2 main characters played by Michael Urie and Philemon Chambers enchanted me because they had an incredible chemistry at all times. Chambers will undoubtedly have a great future as an actor and it is wonderful that they included a black character among so many white ones, this time it seemed natural and not forced.
Mi Opinión
Lo primero que debo decir de esta película es que amena y sobre todo es para toda la familia a pesar de tener una pareja gay como protagonistas por primera vez creo, es una fortuna que haya sido tan sutiles y dejen en segundo plano el hecho de la sexualidad de los protagonistas. Nunca sentí juicios de valor o discriminación de ningún tipo, la película se centra en como nuestras familias juegan un rol primordial en nuestra felicidad
Lo que más gusto me dio fue encontrarme con un elenco maravilloso, empático y muy cercano que permite al espectador sentirse parte de una trama excelentemente bien hecha a pesar de estar plagada de los principales elementos del género y que nunca sentí aburrida es más diría que es refrescante encontrarse una historia navideña tratando temas cotidianos desde una perspectiva diferente. También ame la participación de niños dentro de la historia, ellos también son protagonistas de una película donde, el amor es el personaje principal.
Los 2 personajes principales interpretados por Michael Urie y Philemon Chambers me encantaron porque tuvieron una química increíble en todo momento. Chambers sin duda tendrá un gran futuro como actor además es maravilloso que incluyeran a un personaje negro entre tantos blancos, esta vez me pareció natural y no forzado.
The musical selection is simply spectacular and among the songs I appreciated were Join to the world by the great Whitney Houston (mentioned in the film as the best version of this gospel which is totally true) and Santa can you hear me? by the most searched artist on Google this year Britney Spears (in case you didn't know).
Although I must confess that Netflix is not the best place to watch a good movie I must also admit that I was pleasantly satisfied and although this movie is not even remotely the one that will be on the radars of the press and specialized critics, I have to declare it officially my favorite Christmas movie.
La selección musical es sencillamente espectacular y entre las canciones que agradecí estuvieron Join to the world de la gran Whitney Houston (que en la película mencionan como la mejor versión de este góspel cosa totalmente cierta) y Santa can you hear me? de la artista más buscada en Google este año Britney Spears (por si no lo sabían).
Aunque debo confesar que Netflix no es el mejor lugar para ver una buena película debo admitir también que quede gratamente satisfecho y aunque esta película no sea ni remotamente la que acaparara los radares de la prensa y la crítica especializada, tengo que declararla oficialmente mi película favorita de navidad.
