In early May I reviewed the horror film Bloodthirsty , one of the best independent horror offerings I've seen this year. In that review I had said that I had to see the director's previous film and review it. Now, the film is now available on a streaming platform and fulfilling what I promised, this is my review.

Bleed with Me was the feature film debut of Amelia Moses. Although the other film, according to IMDB data says it is also from the same year, this one was released first. I discussed her career in my film review of Bloodthirsty. Bleed with Me received very positive reviews from the experts. I hadn't had the pleasure of seeing it, but with Bloodthirsty I was seduced by her style and I had an immense desire to enjoy her first film.
On this occasion, my opinion coincides with that of the experts. His debut feature, without being a totally perfect film, enveloped me in its plot, a harrowing story about the effects of paranoia, told at a very slow pace but giving master strokes, to paint an incredible and emotionally devastating picture.
As in Bloodthirsty, the few resources are masterfully used to the story's advantage. The location is a cabin in a remote location, far from the big city, with the presence of only three characters. Low-budget cinema but with a story where you have to be attentive to the small details.
Amelia Moses has become one of my new favorite filmmakers. She, along with other female filmmakers have captivated me with their horror films this year. Search IMDB and there is no information on her next project, I don't know what she is working on.

Thanks to the streaming platform Shudder I have been able to enjoy the film, which I can say I liked as much as Bloodthirsty. Comparing the two, I can't define if one is better than the other. Both films have points in common, they explore psychological horror but they are two different stories with shocking endings.

Bleed with Me fue el debut en el largometraje de Amelia Moses. Aunque la otra película, segun los datos de IMDB dicen que también es del mismo año, esta se estrenó primero. Ya hablé de su carrera en mi crítica cinematográfica de Bloodthirsty. Bleed with Me recibió críticas muy positivas de los expertos. Yo no había tenido el placer de verla, pero con Bloodthirsty me sedujo su estilo y me entraron unas ganas inmensas de disfrutar de su primera película.
En esta ocasión, mi opinión coincide con la de los expertos. Su ópera prima, sin ser una película totalmente perfecta, me envolvió en su trama, una historia angustiosa sobre los efectos de la paranoia, contada con un ritmo muy lento pero que va dando pinceladas de maestro, para pintar un cuadro increíble y emocionalmente devastador.
Al igual que en Bloodthirsty, los pocos recursos están magistralmente utilizados a favor de la historia. La localización es una cabaña en un lugar remoto, lejos de la gran ciudad, con la presencia de sólo tres personajes. Cine de bajo presupuesto pero con una historia en la que hay que estar atento a los pequeños detalles.
Amelia Moses pasa a formar parte de mis nuevas cineastas favoritas. Ella, junto con otras mujeres cineastas me han cautivado con sus películas de horror este año. Busque en IMDB y no hay información sobre su próximo proyecto, no sé en qué está trabajando.

Gracias a la plataforma de streaming Shudder he podido disfrutar de la película, que puedo decir que me ha gustado tanto como Bloodthirsty. Al compararlas, no puedo definir si una es mejor que la otra. Ambas películas tienen puntos en común, exploran el horror psicológico pero son dos historias diferentes con finales impactantes.
What is the plot of the film?
Emily and Brandan are sweethearts and they are going to spend a vacation at the old cabin that belongs to Emily's family. She suffered an accident some time ago, from which she is still recovering, she can't walk very well. Rowan is a young co-worker of Emily's, they have become great friends and she has been invited by Emily to go to the cabin with them. Rowan seems happy to accompany them, but during their stay at the cabin things start to happen that Rowan doesn't seem to be clear about. She wakes up with cuts on her arm and begins to suspect that Emily is doing something to her. Rowan's visions are confusing and she thinks her friend is taking her blood every night. Her health condition is worsening, making her unable to distinguish between hallucinations and reality. What is happening in the cabin? Is Emily really a good friend? Why is Brandan arguing with Emily? How can Rowan escape from that place? Is Emily a vampire? Is it all reality or the fantasy of a mentally ill young woman?

Emily, her boyfriend Brandan and her co-worker friend Rowan. The first two have been in a romantic relationship for some time. Brandan has been the person who, after the accident, has supported his girlfriend. Rowan is the unknown girl, the person who is going to spend a few days with the couple. With this simple plot begins this journey into the mind of a person who seems to suffer from paranoid schizophrenia.
If when you see the cabin you imagine that the story goes the way of haunted houses, you are wrong. The film is of the psychological horror genre, because everything Rowan will experience during those days in the cabin, are clear symptoms of a trauma that has affected him mentally. Although we will not be very clear if they are a product of his imagination or really his friend Emily is sucking his blood during the nights.
With a slow pace we will discover the personalities of each character, as well as some secrets they keep. The film's director wants to play with us, throwing us off the track and making us doubt between reality and the visions produced by paranoia.
The fear, the distrust that Rowan manifests, the anxiety, the sudden changes of mood in certain scenes, clearly we can notice those terrible symptoms of someone who is cornered inside his own paranoid mind.
We have all been victims of paranoia. It is normal. For example, years ago I was threatened with death by powerful people and for a while, I had those symptoms, a product of the paranoia I felt at the thought that anyone could be my executioner.
Today there are many paranoid people in the world, the pandemic has provoked that sense of danger in many people. The mere fact of having to be vaccinated has generated paranoid thoughts in many people. But this fear is something normal in the human being, the serious thing is when it reaches the extreme of schizophrenia, where we will see threats where they do not exist and we will even have hallucinations.

Emily, su novio Brandan y su amiga compañera de trabajo Rowan. Los dos primeros mantienen una relación sentimental desde hace tiempo. Brandan ha sido la persona que tras el accidente ha apoyado a su novia. Rowan es la chica desconocida, la persona que va a pasar unos días con la pareja. Con esta sencilla trama comienza este viaje a la mente de una persona que parece sufrir esquizofrenia paranoide.
Si al ver la cabaña te imaginas que la historia va por el camino de las casas encantadas, te equivocas. La película es del género de terror psicológico, porque todo lo que Rowan experimentará durante esos días en la cabaña, son claros síntomas de un trauma que le ha afectado mentalmente. Aunque no tendremos muy claro si son producto de su imaginación o realmente su amiga Emily le está chupando la sangre durante las noches.
Con un ritmo lento iremos descubriendo las personalidades de cada personaje, así como algunos secretos que guardan. El director de la película quiere jugar con nosotros, despistándonos y haciéndonos dudar entre la realidad y las visiones producidas por la paranoia.
El miedo, la desconfianza que manifiesta Rowan, la ansiedad, los cambios bruscos de humor en determinadas escenas, claramente podemos notar esos terribles síntomas de alguien que está acorralado dentro de su propia mente paranoica.
Todos hemos sido víctimas de la paranoia. Es normal. Por ejemplo, hace años fui amenazado de muerte por gente poderosa y durante un tiempo, tuve esos síntomas, producto de la paranoia que sentía al pensar que cualquiera podía ser mi verdugo.
Hoy en día hay muchos paranoicos en el mundo, la pandemia ha provocado esa sensación de peligro en muchas personas. El mero hecho de tener que vacunarse ha generado pensamientos paranoicos en mucha gente. Pero este miedo es algo normal en el ser humano, lo grave es cuando se llega al extremo de la esquizofrenia, donde veremos amenazas donde no existen e incluso tendremos alucinaciones.
Without the need to use a great technical deployment, the filmmaker puts us in the skin of that character. We see and feel Rowan's mental confusion that increases every night. Is she drugged? Is she sleepwalking? The guest girl's health gets worse and worse. What is the reason? Is it because her blood is being drawn? Rowan seems to be losing her mind, but Emily's character is shown with ambiguous behavior that makes us suspect that something is not right, that there is something Emily is hiding.
If as a viewer you get into this tangle of intrigue, you will also feel confused, not knowing who to believe. Is what Rowan sees real or is the truth that she is sick in the head and Emily just wants to take care of her, because she is a good friend and appreciates her?
This eerie situation inside the cabin drew me in. The feeling of isolation is another symptom of paranoid schizophrenia, so we are observers of Rowan's transformation from having a good attitude, healthy, shy and in a state of peace, to feeling hopeless, in a state of depression, insecurity and noticeable fatigue on a physical level. She believes what her mind makes her believe.
As we delve deeper into this character, we realize that her shyness is not normal, she is a young woman who at some point in her past had to suffer some kind of psychological trauma, she is a strange girl, with few friends and who feels admiration for Emily, for her beauty, for what she has, for Emily's relationship with her boyfriend. Deep down she seems to feel envy and desire what the other has.
Emily is not well either, she suffered an accident that has left her with serious physical sequelae, so we can deduce that psychologically she is also affected. In addition, the loss of a sister in the past, it seems that it is something she has not overcome and that is why she cares about Rowan , she wants her by her side, as if she were a sister.
Both women build a somewhat unhealthy friendship, where each of them seems to depend on the other. We will have to be attentive to the details, to determine what is reality and what is part of Rowan's hallucinations. Or maybe we are wrong and Emily is really a woman who is consuming her best friend's blood.
In this isolated setting and with minimal characters, the filmmaker creates an unsettling atmosphere, building the tension in the cabin slowly but effectively. We are aware that this toxic relationship between the friends is a bomb that will soon explode.
Sin necesidad de utilizar un gran despliegue técnico, el cineasta nos pone en la piel de ese personaje. Vemos y sentimos la confusión mental de Rowan que aumenta cada noche. ¿Está drogada? ¿Es sonámbula? La salud de la chica invitada empeora cada vez más. ¿Cuál es la razón? ¿Es porque le están sacando sangre? Rowan parece estar perdiendo la cabeza, pero el personaje de Emily se muestra con un comportamiento ambiguo que nos hace sospechar que algo no está bien, que hay algo que Emily está ocultando.
Si como espectador te adentras en esta maraña de intriga, también te sentirás confuso, sin saber a quién creer. ¿Es real lo que ve Rowan o la verdad es que está enferma de la cabeza y Emily sólo quiere cuidarla, porque es una buena amiga y la aprecia?
Esta inquietante situación en el interior de la cabaña me atrajo. La sensación de aislamiento es otro de los síntomas de la esquizofrenia paranoide, por lo que somos observadores de la transformación de Rowan, que pasa de tener una buena actitud, sana, tímida y en un estado de paz, a sentirse desesperada, en un estado de depresión, inseguridad y una notable fatiga a nivel físico. Ella cree lo que su mente le hace creer.
A medida que profundizamos en este personaje, nos damos cuenta de que su timidez no es normal, es una joven que en algún momento de su pasado tuvo que sufrir algún tipo de trauma psicológico, es una chica extraña, con pocos amigos y que siente admiración por Emily, por su belleza, por lo que tiene, por la relación de Emily con su novio. En el fondo parece sentir envidia y desear lo que la otra tiene.
Emily tampoco está bien, sufrió un accidente que le ha dejado graves secuelas físicas, por lo que podemos deducir que psicológicamente también está afectada. Además, la pérdida de una hermana en el pasado, parece que es algo que no ha superado y por eso se preocupa por Rowan , la quiere a su lado, como si fuera una hermana.
Ambas mujeres construyen una amistad un tanto malsana, donde cada una de ellas parece depender de la otra. Habrá que estar atentos a los detalles, para determinar qué es la realidad y qué forma parte de las alucinaciones de Rowan. O tal vez estemos equivocados y Emily sea realmente una mujer que está consumiendo la sangre de su mejor amiga.
En este entorno aislado y con unos personajes mínimos, el cineasta crea una atmósfera inquietante, aumentando la tensión en la cabaña, lenta pero eficazmente. Somos conscientes de que esta relación tóxica entre las amigas es una bomba que pronto explotará.
No one knows anyone. Inviting a stranger or accepting the invitation can be deadly, in this case for both parties. Situations we can't explain, our minds can play tricks on us and paranoia can push us to do terrible things. Who will completely lose their mind, Emily or Rowan?
The Canadian filmmaker also wrote the screenplay for her first feature film. The music is by Dominic Caterina and the cinematography by René Arseneau. For her second film, others were in charge of these areas. Although they were the work of different people, both films have the author's stamp. That's why I also declare myself a fan of Moses, because his personality and style are noticeable in both productions. Situaciones que no podemos explicar, nuestra mente puede jugarnos malas pasadas y la paranoia puede empujarnos a hacer cosas terribles. ¿Quién perderá completamente la cabeza, Emily o Rowan?
La cineasta canadiense también escribió el guión de su primera película. La música es de Dominic Caterina y la fotografía de René Arseneau. Para su segunda película, otros se encargaron de estas áreas. Aunque fueron trabajos de diferentes personas, ambas películas tienen el sello del autor. Por eso también me declaro fan de Moisés, porque su personalidad y su estilo se notan en ambas producciones. I loved the performances of the two lead actresses.
Lauren Beatty plays Emily. The girl who sees Rowan's fragility and decides to be her friend to take care of her, so she invites her to spend a few days with them at the cabin. But is she what she seems, what is she hiding? She conveys a lot of sweetness and concern for Rowan seems legitimate, she also has to deal with the aftermath of her accident and her relationship with her boyfriend seems to have problems. We had already seen the actress in the filmmaker's other film, where she was the absolute protagonist. In that film she gave a great performance and now, after watching Bleed with Me I understand why the filmmaker chose her to be the protagonist of the next film. Emely's character manages to be ambiguous, mysterious and at the same time fragile and kind. A great actress who I hope the filmmaker re-signs for another film.
Lee Marshall plays Rowan. The young woman who seems happy to be invited to the cabin, as she is very shy and has little social contact. But little does she know that her stay there will be affected by her own madness. In this film it is this actress who has the most importance in the story and she does a great job. Her mental and physical deterioration will be very drastic, until her mental illness takes over her actions. A round of applause for this actress, who is not well known, but who had worked in one of the director's short films. An actress I would like to see again in another production. No information about a new project. Let's hope Moses will keep her in mind in his future plans.
Aris Tyros plays Breandan, Emily's boyfriend. He has made work and personal sacrifices to be always supporting his girlfriend, but it seems that the problems overcome him. He is a supporting character, the Canadian actor does well in his role as the boyfriend, but really the important thing about the film is the friendship between the female characters. I have not seen any of the other films in which the actor has participated.
They are not well-known actors, but they do an excellent job under Amelia Moses.

Bleed with Me is a psychological horror film that I highly recommend. Of course, you already know the kind of productions that fascinate me. Para is a film that fulfilled the goal of absorbing me in its story, with really disturbing moments, without the need to show too much and using a rather slow pace.
If you are encouraged to watch it, I have another suggestion for you, after watching it, also look for Bloodthirsty to enjoy the two films made by this promising filmmaker. They are two films that I loved and I hope that other people know how to appreciate good cinema.

Bleed with Me es una película de terror psicológico que recomiendo encarecidamente. Por supuesto, ya conocéis el tipo de producciones que me fascinan. Para es una película que cumplió el objetivo de absorberme en su historia, con momentos realmente inquietantes, sin necesidad de mostrar demasiado y utilizando un ritmo bastante lento.
Si te animas a verla, tengo otra sugerencia para ti, después de verla, busca también Bloodthirsty para disfrutar de las dos películas realizadas por este prometedor cineasta. Son dos películas que me encantaron y espero que otras personas sepan apreciar el buen cine.
