This year I have seen very good horror movies from different countries. Looking for something new and different, I came across this Russian production. I have seen few Russian horror movies and that's why I didn't hesitate for a second to choose Pobochnyi effekt .

The title caught my attention, as well as the poster. I mean the original title, because for the Spanish market they came up with the title La mano del Demonio (The Devil's Hand). Another mistake in changing the original titles of the movies. Who will be in charge of this job? How much will they charge for inventing such bad titles? I think that for the English market, the title is Mara.
Pobochnyi effekt is written and directed by a Russian filmmaker named Aleksey Kazakov. It is his directorial debut, but he is a famous screenwriter in his country. Kazarov was in charge of writing the screenplay for the recent Russian film version of the Chernobyl tragedy, in response to the successful miniseries aired by HBO. The Russians wanted to tell the story from their point of view because they were upset with the U.S. version.
Kazakov has a long track record as a screenwriter with successful films in Russia, but which are little known on this side of the world. I have not seen the film Chernobyl written by him and directed by Danila Kozlovskiy, it is something I have pending. I haven't seen any of the other films written by Kazarov either, so this is the first time I've rated something made by this renowned filmmaker who is currently in post-production on his second film as director: The Rage, to be released next year.
Without even having seen anything previous, I ventured into this horror film, expecting to be surprised.
It is a strange piece of work, I recommend having an open mind to enjoy this visually hypnotic experience, but whose story may be difficult to engage the viewer, although it has good fantastic elements in the plot.
I can't say I was totally satisfied, but I think fans of the horror genre can watch it and appreciate all the positive aspects of the film. I liked the makeup work, the special effects and the cinematography, which is the highlight of the film.

El título me llamó la atención, así como el cartel. Me refiero al título original, porque para el mercado español se les ocurrió ponerle el título de La mano del Demonio. Otro error al cambiar los títulos originales de las películas. ¿Quién se encargará de este trabajo? ¿Cuánto cobrarán por inventar títulos tan malos? Creo que para le mercado ingles, el titulo es Mara.
Pobochnyi effekt está escrita y dirigida por un cineasta ruso llamado Aleksey Kazakov. Es su debut como director, pero es guionista famoso en su país. Kazarov fue el encargado de escribir el guión de la reciente versión cinematográfica rusa de la tragedia de Chernóbil, en respuesta a la exitosa miniserie emitida por HBO. Los rusos querían contar la historia desde su punto de vista porque estaban molestos con la versión estadounidense.
Kazakov tiene una larga trayectoria como guionista con películas de éxito en Rusia, pero que son poco conocidas en este lado del mundo. No he visto la película Chernobyl escrita por el y dirigida por Danila Kozlovskiy, es algo que tengo pendiente. Tampoco he visto ninguna de las otras películas escritas por Kazarov, así que es la primera vez que valoro algo hecho por este reconocido cineasta que actualmente está en la postproducción de su segunda película como director: The Rage, que se estrenará el próximo año.
Sin ni haber visto nada anterior, me aventuré en esta película de terror, esperando sorprenderme.
Es una obra extraña, recomiendo tener la mente abierta para disfrutar de esta experiencia visualmente hipnótica, pero cuya historia puede ser difícil que atrape al espectador, aunque tiene buenos elementos fantásticos en la trama.
No puedo decir que haya quedado totalmente satisfecho, pero creo que los aficionados al género de terror pueden verla y apreciar todos los aspectos positivos de la película. Me agrado el trabajo de maquillaje, los efectos especiales y la fotografía, que es lo más destacado de la película.
What is the plot of Pobochnyi effekt?
Andrey and Olya are a young married couple, they are happy, he works as an architect and she is a singer. One night, when they arrive home, a tragedy occurs. Burglars break into their house. What happens that night will have a negative effect on their relationship and Andrey wants his wife to forget that terrible moment. He wants everything to go back to the way it was. Looking for a way to recover the happiness of his decadent marriage, he turns as a last option to a woman who might have the magic formula to achieve it. She is the beautiful and mysterious Mara, who lives in a large apartment. She is a specialist in solving many problems using different types of mushrooms. Andrey only has to feed his wife with a mushroom that Mara gives him, at the same time she offers him that they can spend a few months in her apartment, since she has to travel for a while. The desperate Andrey accepts, what he doesn't know is the price he will have to pay. Will Olya forget the trauma? Will Andrey get his wife back? Who is Mara? What is she hiding? Where do her powers come from? What will happen to Andrey and Olya in that place?

My opinion
The character who represents evil in the film is called Mara. She is a beautiful woman, who lives in an apartment where she receives visits from people who need her help, what these people don't know is that they will all have to pay a very high price for the small favor.
The demonic character is inspired by a part of Slavic mythology, a kind of witch with great powers. Kazakov mixes this demonic being from Slavic culture with a personal experience he had in the past. According to what he told during the promotion of the film, he was the victim of an armed robbery inside his house. A terrible experience that affected his entire family and that, through the writing of the script and the staging of the film, served him to catharsis and get rid of the terrible memory.
We have all gone through terrible moments in our lives, in my case I was about to die because of crime in my country, when I was the victim of a robbery. The gun pointed directly at my face is something I will never forget. Although in my case I was not afraid, my mind went blank and I was just waiting for the criminal to pull the trigger. That didn't happen and now they enjoy (or suffer) my reviews on Hive.
Forgetting a traumatic event, something horrible that marked our life. It's what many wish they could do. If only there was a magic pill that, when taken, would erase the memories that we don't want to haunt us for the rest of our lives. Unfortunately, that is only possible in fiction, in novels and movies. In real life you have to go to therapy or try to overcome the trauma.

El personaje que representa el mal en la película se llama Mara. Es una mujer hermosa, que vive en un apartamento donde recibe visitas de personas que necesitan su ayuda, lo que estas personas no saben es que todas tendrán que pagar un precio muy alto por el pequeño favor.
El personaje demoníaco está inspirado en una parte de la mitología eslava, una especie de bruja con grandes poderes. En la cultura popular eslava se la conoce como Vid'ma y si te interesa leer más sobre esta creencia histórica, puedes leer este artículo: link También puedes hacer una búsqueda más profunda en internet, para tener una noción más clara sobre la inspiración del cineasta para crear el personaje.
Kazakov hace una mezcla de este ser demoníaco de la cultura eslava, con una experiencia personal que tuvo en el pasado. Según contó durante la promoción de la película, fue víctima de un robo a mano armada dentro de su casa. Una experiencia terrible que afectó a toda su familia y que a través de la escritura del guión y la puesta en escena de la película, le sirvió para sacar hacer catarsis y desprenderse del terrible recuerdo.
Todos hemos pasado por momentos terribles en nuestras vidas, en mi caso estuve a punto de morir a causa de la delincuencia en mi país, cuando fui víctima de un robo. La pistola apuntando directamente a mi cara es algo que nunca olvidaré. Aunque en mi caso no tuve miedo, mi mente se quedó en blanco y sólo esperaba que el delincuente apretara el gatillo. Eso no ocurrió y ahora disfrutan (o sufren) mis reseñas en Hive.
Olvidar un hecho traumático, algo horrible que marcó nuestra vida. Es lo que muchos quisieran poder hacer. Si existiera una píldora mágica que, al tomarla, borrara los recuerdos que no queremos que nos persigan el resto de nuestra vida. Por desgracia, eso sólo es posible en la ficción, en las novelas y las películas. En la vida real hay que ir a terapia o intentar superar el trauma.
Andrey's character is desperate. All the happiness, all the plans he had with his wife, vanish in a second. That is why he does not hesitate to accept the help of this woman named Mara, who assures him that his wife will forget all the bad things and come back to him. To give him more security, she offers him to stay for several months in her spacious and luxurious apartment.
When everything seems too good, there is something bad behind it. It must be taken into account. Soon the couple moves into the apartment, but strange visions and the presence of other people disturb the peace and happiness Andrey seems to have regained.
Slavic mythology, haunted houses, fantasy and even eco-horror elements ( the mushrooms ) are part of this strange Russian film that, while making Olya forget all her past and turning Andrey's life into a nightmare, in me it exerted a power of attraction with its beautiful and disturbing scenes. It is difficult to describe in words what the film made me feel, it was something strange, could it be that those Vid'ma exist in reality and were bewitching me through the images?
El personaje de Andrey está desesperado. Toda la felicidad, todos los planes que tenía con su mujer, se esfuman en un segundo. Por eso no duda en aceptar la ayuda de esa mujer llamada Mara, que le asegura que su mujer olvidará todo lo malo y volverá con él. Para darle más seguridad, le ofrece quedarse durante varios meses en su amplio y lujoso apartamento.
Cuando todo parece demasiado bueno, hay algo malo detrás. Hay que tenerlo en cuenta. Pronto la pareja se instala en el apartamento, pero extrañas visiones y la presencia de otras personas perturban la paz y la felicidad que Andrey parece haber recuperado.
Mitología eslava, casas encantadas, fantasía e incluso elementos de eco-horror ( los hongos ) forman parte de esta extraña película rusa que, a la vez que hace olvidar a Olya todo su pasado y convierte la vida de Andrey en una pesadilla, en mí ejerció un poder de atracción con sus bellas e inquietantes escenas. Es difícil describir con palabras lo que la película me hizo sentir, era algo extraño, ¿será que esas Vid'ma existen en la realidad y me estaban hechizando a través de las imágenes?

Overcoming past traumas and the fear of being forgotten are two important themes within the story. Making pacts with demons is never a good idea, because they will always want something in return. What Andrey desires, he will be granted, but the enigmatic witch expert in hallucinogenic mushrooms wants something in return.
He is not the first, nor will he be the last to fall into the deadly trap. Facing this evil force seems an unwinnable battle, but the force of love is great and powerful. Andrey will not give up and is willing to make any sacrifice to save his wife, the person he loves most in the world.
Who will win? Evil or good? Love or hate? Faith or black magic? When Andrey discovers who Mara really is, it may be too late.
Uno de los responsables de embrujarme visualmente es el director de fotografía de la película: Evgeny Kozlov, que realiza un trabajo impecable, siendo la fotografía uno de los puntos fuertes de la película. Tanto en los ambientes cerrados, con presencia de fantasmas y visiones, como en las escenas ambientadas en esos paisajes desolados que vemos en la parte final de la película. La superación de los traumas del pasado y el miedo a ser olvidado son dos temas importantes dentro de la historia. Hacer pactos con los demonios nunca es una buena idea, porque siempre querrán algo a cambio. Lo que Andrey desea, le será concedido, pero la enigmática bruja experta en hongos alucinógenos quiere algo a cambio.
No es el primero, ni será el último en caer en la trampa mortal. Enfrentarse a esta fuerza maligna parece una batalla imposible de ganar, pero la fuerza del amor es grande y poderosa. Andrey no se rendirá y está dispuesto a hacer cualquier sacrificio para salvar a su esposa, la persona que más ama en el mundo.

Characters/ Personajes
The beauty of actress Aleksandra Revenko, who plays Mara, also exerted a strong power of attraction. I felt spellbound by the appearances of that character who symbolizes evil at its best. The first time I see the actress, I think she must be famous in Russia, because according to her IMDB profile she has worked in several movies and TV series. It's the first time I see her and I was bewitched. Her acting is not impressive, but for the type of character she plays, she fulfills perfectly embodying that Slavic myth, a witch who uses beauty and the power of seduction to achieve her goals.
Semyon Serzin and Marina Vasileva are the other actors in the film. They play Andrey and Olya, the young couple who are married and happy, until tragedy enters the home. Evaluating their performances is difficult, without knowing anything about their previous work. I like to compare the work of actors, but in this case, they are complete strangers to me. From my point of view they both do very well, certainly the actor playing Andrey has the most presence in the film, conveying many emotions, failure, disappointment, rage, fear and anger. I think the actor does a great job.
La belleza de la actriz Aleksandra Revenko, que interpreta a Mara, también ejerció un fuerte poder de atracción. Me sentí hechizado por las apariciones de ese personaje que simboliza el mal en su máxima expresión. Es la primera vez que veo a la actriz, pienso que debe ser famosa en Rusia, porque según su perfil en IMDB ha trabajado en varias películas y series de televisión. Es la primera vez que la veo y me embrujo. Su actuación no es impresionante, pero para el tipo de personaje que interpreta, cumple perfectamente personificando ese mito eslavo, una bruja que utiliza la belleza y el poder de seducción para conseguir sus objetivos.
Semyon Serzin y Marina Vasileva son los otros actores de la película. Interpretan a Andrey y Olya, la joven pareja que está casada y es feliz, hasta que la tragedia entra en el hogar. Evaluar sus interpretaciones es difícil, sin saber nada de sus trabajos anteriores. Me gusta comparar el trabajo de los actores, pero en este caso, son unos completos desconocidos para mí. Desde mi punto de vista los dos lo hacen muy bien, desde luego el actor que interpreta a Andrey es el que tiene más presencia en la película, transmitiendo muchas emociones, fracaso, decepción, rabia, miedo e ira. Creo que el actor hace un gran trabajo.
Pobochnyi effekt is a love story with horror and fantasy inspired by an evil being from Slavic mythology, which left me wanting to see more about that witch. It also left me wanting to see other Russian offerings in the horror genre. The story captivated me visually although narratively it didn't impact me and the ending is predictable, I recommend it if you like to experiment watching obscure movies.
I don't know on what platform or streaming service it is available in your country. Search for it first by its original title. I hope you like it. Pobochnyi effekt es una historia de amor con horror y fantasía inspirada en un ser maligno de la mitología eslava, que me dejó con ganas de ver más sobre esa bruja. También me dejó con ganas de ver otras propuestas rusas del género de terror. La historia me cautivó visualmente aunque narrativamente no me impactó y el final es predecible, la recomiendo si te gusta experimentar viendo películas poco conocidas.
