Previously I have talked about Shudder, the American streaming service that has in its catalog many productions of the horror genre. The owners of this company is the AMC corporation. Yes, the same of the channel where The Walking Dead is broadcasted. They have a wide variety of movies and most of the ones I've seen I've liked. That's not to say they have some not so good titles. But thanks to Shudder I found this hauntingly atmospheric film Caveat.

Caveat is an independent British production from production company HyneSight Films made especially for distribution by Shudder. I didn't know anything about the film, I picked it at random and it has been a pleasant surprise to see this horror story.
I think like many of my indie circuit film recommendations, it's a film that most won't like. It has all the factors that I like as a viewer, wanting to see something different, but that bores others.
I have always stated that I have strange tastes in cinema. That doesn't stop me from enjoying Hollywood productions made for the sole purpose of entertaining. But the movies that I really enjoy to the fullest and make me shudder are of a different kind.
I find beauty in ugliness, amusement in the disturbing, thrill in horror. I don't have a logical explanation for it, I've been like that since I was a kid and that's why my circle of friends in the real world is very small, because I only open myself to people with similar tastes.
Caveat is the debut of British filmmaker Damian Mc Carthy. He writes the screenplay and directs the film. Checking his IMDB profile we find that he has only made feature films and music videos, of which I haven't seen any. I looked up his instagram and he seems like a nice young man, I liked his film and I'm going to follow him on that social network to keep an eye out for his future production, I'll send him a message congratulating him, he may never get back to me. As usual in all my reviews, I will explain briefly and without spoilers what the plot is and then I will express my opinion. But I warn you that it is not a movie that will please everyone.

Caveat es una producción británica independiente de la productora HyneSight Films realizada especialmente para su distribución por Shudder. No sabía nada de la película, la elegí al azar y ha sido una agradable sorpresa ver esta historia de terror.
Creo que al igual que muchas de mis recomendaciones de películas del circuito indie, es una película que no le va a gustar a la mayoría. Tiene todos los factores que me gustan como espectador, con ganas de ver algo diferente, pero que aburre a los demás.
Siempre he afirmado que tengo gustos extraños en el cine. Eso no me impide disfrutar de las producciones de Hollywood hechas con el único propósito de entretener. Pero las películas que realmente disfruto al máximo y me hacen estremecer son de otro tipo.
Encuentro belleza en la fealdad, diversión en lo perturbador, emoción en el horror. No tengo una explicación lógica para ello, soy así desde que era un niño y por eso mi círculo de amigos en el mundo real es muy reducido, porque sólo me abro a personas con gustos similares.
Caveat es el debut del cineasta británico Damian Mc Carthy. Escribe el guión y dirige la película. Comprobando su perfil en IMDB encontramos que sólo ha hecho largometrajes y vídeos musicales, de los cuales no he visto ninguno. Como es habitual en todas mis críticas, explicaré breve y sin spoilers cuál es la trama y luego expresaré mi opinión. Pero os advierto que no es una película que agradara a todos.
What is the plot of Caveat?
Isaac is recovering from a terrible accident that has left him with a bad memory, there are things from his life and recent past that he doesn't remember. Being penniless, one day he receives an excellent financial offer from his friend Barret. Isaac only has to go and take care of Olga, Barret's niece, for five days. What they don't tell him at first is that the house where Olga lives is located on an island and that the young girl is completely deranged. Her mother has disappeared and her father has committed suicide, and in order to stay the five days to take care of her and earn the promised money, he must remain chained so that he cannot enter Olga's room. What happened to Olga's mother? Why did her father commit suicide? What secret is Barret hiding? Is the house haunted? Will Isaac remember what happened in the past?

With the first sequence of the film, we immediately enter an unsettling atmosphere. One of the greatest successes of the film is to maintain that feeling throughout its duration.
The house, which seems to have some kind of curse or supernatural presence, is located on an island, which increases the sense of isolation in which the story unfolds. The house is in a deplorable state, destroyed walls, lots of darkness, dirt and abandonment.
Who can live in such a state? The character of Olga, Barret's young niece, is the only inhabitant of the house, a woman whose mental state is reflected in her eyes. She is completely crazy!
She speaks very little and in the presence of other people she covers her eyes, becoming paralyzed. She is terrified because she thinks someone is going to attack her. Amidst all the filth in the house, she wanders around at night carrying a toy in the shape of a rabbit that plays a drum. These scenes are shocking and make the atmosphere stranger.
Con la primera secuencia de la película, entramos inmediatamente en una atmósfera inquietante. Uno de los mayores aciertos de la película es mantener esa sensación durante toda su duración.
La casa, que parece tener algún tipo de maldición o presencia sobrenatural, está situada en una isla, lo que aumenta la sensación de aislamiento en la que se desarrolla la historia. La casa tiene un estado deplorable, paredes destruidas, mucha oscuridad, suciedad y abandono.
¿Quién puede vivir en ese estado? El personaje de Olga, la joven sobrina de Barret, es la única habitante de la casa, una mujer cuyo estado mental se refleja en sus ojos. ¡Está completamente loca!
Habla muy poco y en presencia de otras personas se tapa los ojos, quedándose paralizada. Está aterrorizada porque cree que alguien va a atacarla. En medio de toda la suciedad de la casa, deambula por la noche llevando un juguete con forma de conejo que toca un tambor. Estas escenas son impactantes y hacen que la atmósfera sea más extraña.
Why does Isaac accept the proposal? For money. He needs money, he is recovering from the accident, there are things he does not remember and Barret is made an offer impossible to refuse, to take care of his crazy niece in exchange for a good amount of money. But to do so he must remain chained, as she doesn't trust anyone and doesn't want this stranger in her room. I would never have agreed to do that. I would immediately go back to my apartment, it's complete madness, having to be chained up, but the need for money and the fact that it will only be for five days, manage to convince Isaac.
During this time, both characters, in the house isolated from civilization, begin to relate to each other. But things get difficult for Isaac, who begins to remember small details of some past events, wanting to quickly break free from the chains and get out of that place.
Is it a haunted house movie? Yes, it falls into the haunted house genre, because something supernatural seems to exist inside that ruined house. At times the film will play with us, because we can't trust everything that is shown, both characters have mental problems. Olga is totally crazy and Isaac has lost his memory.
You have to be patient with the story, let the filmmaker show us the cards calmly. You will not find scares that shake the pace, everything is kept slow, but each time the actions of the characters are more disturbing.
We will discover all the secrets hidden inside the house and everything that happened within those walls. A slightly twisted story, which may not surprise after its final revelation, but it works as an uncomfortable film for the viewer.
The story is not groundbreaking, but it is disturbing, it meets the parameters of the genre that make it good. I consider it a gothic, psychological horror film.
¿Por qué acepta Isaac la propuesta? Por dinero. Necesita dinero, se está recuperando del accidente, hay cosas que no recuerda y a Barret se le hace una oferta imposible de rechazar, cuidar de su loca sobrina a cambio d euna buena cantidad de dinero. Pero para ello debe permanecer encadenado, ya que ella no confía en nadie y no quiere que ese desconocido entre en su habitación. Yo nunca habría aceptado hacer eso. Volvería inmediatamente a mi apartamento, es una completa locura, tener que estar encadenado, pero la necesidad de dinero y el hecho de que sólo será por cinco días, logran convencer a Isaac.
Durante este tiempo, ambos personajes, en la casa aislada de la civilización, comienzan a relacionarse. Pero las cosas se ponen difíciles para Isaac, que empieza a recordar pequeños detalles de algunos sucesos del pasado, deseando liberarse rápidamente de las cadenas y salir de ese lugar.
¿Es una película de casas encantadas? Sí, entra en el género de las casas encantadas, porque algo sobrenatural parece existir dentro de esa casa en ruinas. Por momentos la película jugará con nosotros, porque no podemos confiar en todo lo que se muestra, ambos personajes tienen problemas mentales. Olga está totalmente loca e Isaac ha perdido la memoria.
Hay que tener paciencia con la historia, dejar que el cineasta nos muestre las cartas con calma. No encontrarás sustos que agiten el ritmo, todo se mantiene lento, pero cada vez las acciones de los personajes son más inquietantes.
Descubriremos todos los secretos que se esconden en el interior de la casa y todo lo que ocurrió entre esas paredes. Una historia un poco retorcida, que puede no sorprender tras su revelación final, pero que funciona como una película incómoda para el espectador.
La historia no es rompedora, pero es perturbadora, cumple con los parámetros del género que la hacen buena. La considero una película de terror gótico y psicológico.
Jonathan French plays Isaac. A man affected by memory loss, he is a bit insecure and accepts the strange proposal because he needs the money. Not quite right in the head, the strange things he sees in the house can be considered hallucinations stemming from the accident. But everything gets worse and the memories come in the form of flashbacks, unveiling something terrible. There are many short films in the actor's filmography and this is arguably his most important film.
Jonathan French interpreta a Isaac. Un hombre afectado por la pérdida de memoria, es un poco inseguro y acepta la extraña propuesta porque necesita el dinero. No muy bien de la cabeza, las cosas extrañas que ve en la casa pueden considerarse alucinaciones derivadas del accidente. Pero todo empeora y los recuerdos llegan en forma de flashbacks, desvelando algo terrible. En la filmografía del actor hay muchos cortometrajes y puede decirse que ésta es su película más importante.
Leila Sykes plays Olga. Barret's niece who is absolutely unhinged. A far from normal woman who seems to suffer from a whole host of syndromes and disorders. I would have run out as soon as I saw her with her first crazy reaction hahaha. I loved the character and the actress, especially after making several discoveries in the story. The actress was unknown to me, but her IMDB profile says she also has experience as a writer, producer and director, one of her most important works was in a 2013 series, where she was an actress and wrote several of the episodes.
Ben Caplan plays Barret. Olga's uncle and who will pay Isaac to take care of her. It will only be a few days, he tells her. But he hides from her that the house is isolated on an island and that he will have to be chained. What else is this character hiding? The actor has a longer career and I have seen him in many series and movies. His character has a minor presence, but he plays an important role in the plot.
Leila Sykes interpreta Olga. La sobrina de Barret que está absolutamente desquiciada. Una mujer nada normal que parece sufrir toda una serie de síndromes y trastornos. Yo hubiera salido corriendo nada más verla con su primera reacción loca jajaja. Me encantó el personaje y la actriz, sobre todo después de hacer varios descubrimientos en la historia. La actriz era desconocida para mí, pero en su perfil de IMDB dice que también tiene experiencia como escritora, productora y directora, uno de sus trabajos más importantes fue en una serie de 2013, donde fue actriz y escribió varios de los episodios.
Ben Caplan interpreta a Barret. El tío de Olga y que pagará a Isaac para que la cuide. Sólo serán unos días, le dice. Pero le oculta que la casa está aislada en una isla y que tendrá que estar encadenado. ¿Qué más oculta este personaje? El actor tiene una trayectoria más larga y le he visto en muchas series y películas. Su personaje tiene una presencia menor, pero juega un papel importante en la trama.
Caveat will appeal to very few people. I know few will see it, but it is an indie horror proposition worth watching. Its atmosphere is intriguing, disturbing and fascinating. For those of us who love this kind of movies, where we see beauty in the middle of the most disturbing scenes.
I recommend it, it is a good film. For being the filmmaker's debut it is acceptable, I hope he soon gets to work on another project that has a wider diffusion.

Caveat gustará a muy poca gente. Sé que pocos la verán, pero es una propuesta de terror indie que merece la pena ver. Su atmósfera es intrigante, inquietante y fascinante. Para los que amamos este tipo de películas, donde vemos belleza en medio de las escenas más perturbadoras.
La recomiendo, es una buena película. Para ser el debut del cineasta es aceptable, espero que pronto consiga trabajar en otro proyecto que tenga mayor difusión.
