Last night I saw this French film from two years ago, which features a cast of actors of various nationalities and the story is set in the publishing world. Without seeing the trailer or knowing much about the director, I decided to watch it and found it to be an entertaining French thriller, with a mystery to solve and plot twists that I love in these types of films.

Sin ver el tráiler ni saber mucho sobre el director, decidí verla y me pareció un thriller francés entretenido, con un misterio que resolver y giros argumentales que me encantan en este tipo de películas.

I didn't know or have much information about the film's director, Régis Roinsard. I only know that he had an excellent debut almost ten years ago with a romantic comedy entitled Populaire, which I have not seen. That film had five nominations for the César awards (the French film academy award), but did not win any of them.
I remember that edition of the award because there were some incredible films in competition, that was a great year for French cinema. Michael Haneke's Amour was the winner of the top prize. An absolute masterpiece. There were also Of Rust and Bones, Dans a Maison, Hoy Motors, Lexs Adieux a le Reine, among other great films.
According to the filmmaker's IMDb profile, he is currently working on the post-production of his new film: En attendant Bojangles adapted from a novel written by Olivier Bourdeaut. I have no information about the plot, nor about the actors, I think there is no official trailer yet. But now I am quite interested in seeing this new work of the filmmaker, because I liked Les Traducteurs.
Set in the publishing world, many will think it's a boring story about the pretentious scene in which the world's best-selling writers move. But it's an entertaining crime thriller, with intrigue, theft, hackers, ambitious publishers and someone out for revenge.

No conocía ni tenía mucha información sobre el director de la película, Régis Roinsard. Sólo sé que tuvo un excelente debut hace casi diez años con una comedia romántica titulada Populaire, que no he visto. Esa película tuvo cinco nominaciones a los premios César (el premio de la academia de cine francesa), pero no ganó ninguna de ellas.
Recuerdo esa edición del premio porque había algunas películas increíbles en competición, ese fue un gran año para el cine francés. Amour, de Michael Haneke, fue la ganadora del máximo premio. Una obra maestra absoluta. También estaban Of Rust and Bones, Dans a Maison, Hoy Motors, Lexs Adieux a le Reine, entre otras grandes películas.
Según el perfil del cineasta en IMDb, actualmente está trabajando en la postproducción de su nueva película: En attendant Bojangles adaptada de una novela escrita por Olivier Bourdeaut. No tengo información sobre el argumento, ni sobre los actores, creo que aún no hay tráiler oficial. Pero ahora estoy bastante interesado en ver este nuevo trabajo del cineasta, porque me gustó Les Traducteurs.
Ambientada en el mundo editorial, muchos pensarán que es una historia aburrida sobre la pretenciosa escena en la que se mueven los escritores más vendidos del mundo. Pero es un thriller policíaco entretenido, con intrigas, robos, hackers, editores ambiciosos y alguien con ganas de venganza.
What is the plot of Les Traducteurs?
Éric Angstrom is the owner of a publishing house that has made a fortune publishing the books of the Dedalus saga, written by Oscar Brach, an author that apparently only Angstrom knows in person. He has the rights to publish the third book, to avoid piracy and economic losses, he has hired nine translators of different nationalities to work inside a specially built bunker so that the months they stay there, they do the work in absolute secrecy. The bunker has all the amenities, but it also has rules. Zero contact with the Internet, only ten pages of the original manuscript are delivered each day, and nothing can leave the room where the translators work. Angstrom has the only manuscript in his briefcase, which he never leaves. The problem begins when he receives a message from a hacker who claims to have the first pages of the book and asks for a large sum of money in exchange for not publishing it. A sum of money that will increase as the days go by. Alex, Katerina, Dario, Helene, Javier, Ingrid, Chen, Telma and Konstantinos are the main suspects. One of them has leaked the book and Angstrom will do the unimaginable to find out who did it. Which of the translators is the culprit? How will Angstrom find out? What will his reaction be? Who set the whole trap? Who will get out of the coming hell unscathed? But most importantly, how did he manage to leak the book?

In the style of literary novels whose central theme is to unravel a mystery. The film is a thriller in which everyone is a suspect and a culprit must be found.
When watching this type of film, you have to get into the story and not be too picky about the veracity of many facts. The premise of a professional group of translators agreeing to go underground for two months, with no contact with family or the Internet, is somewhat implausible.
In other productions, for example the excellent Knives Out with Daniel Craig, an investigator must uncover a murderer, solving a mystery in which there are implausible situations and multiple plot twists.
The same happens in The Translators, but the difference is that the culprit must be found for leaking information from the book and supposedly has a hacker helping him from the outside. I make the comparison with Knives Out just to give you an idea of the kind of movie this is, where you have to accept things that if we look too hard for logic, we will impair the enjoyment of the movie. They are different productions and this French film is far from being as excellent as Knives Out.
The first part of the film is an introduction of all the characters. The translators, the editor and his team that will keep control inside the bunker. The film will play with us, showing the editor in one place in front of the apparent culprit, but which we will not see until a certain point.
In this introduction to the characters, we get to know a little about each one, their lives and problems. It's a quick glimpse, not much depth is given to some of the characters, but that's not what's important about the film. We are quickly put into the context of each one's lifestyle. So we get into the game of trying to guess which one of them is the culprit. It has to be one of them, doesn't it?

Al estilo de las novelas literarias cuyo tema central es desentrañar un misterio. La película es un thriller en el que todos son sospechosos y hay que descubrir a un culpable.
Al ver este tipo de películas, hay que meterse en la historia y no ser demasiado exigente con la veracidad de muchos hechos. La premisa de que un grupo profesional de traductores se ponga de acuerdo para permanecer en la clandestinidad durante dos meses, sin contacto con la familia ni con Internet, es algo inverosímil.
En otras producciones, por ejemplo la excelente Knives Out con Daniel Craig, un investigador debe descubrir a un asesino, resolviendo un misterio en el que se dan situaciones inverosímiles y múltiples giros argumentales.
Lo mismo ocurre en The Translators, pero la diferencia es que hay que encontrar al culpable por filtrar la información del libro y supuestamente tiene un hacker que le ayuda desde fuera. Hago la comparación con Knives Out sólo para que tengan una idea del tipo de película que es, donde hay que aceptar cosas que si buscamos demasiado la lógica, perjudicaremos el disfrute de la película. Son producciones diferentes y esta película francesa está lejos de ser tan excelente como Knives Out.
La primera parte de la película es una presentación de todos los personajes. Los traductores, el editor y su equipo que mantendrá el control dentro del búnker. La película jugará con nosotros, mostrando al editor en un lugar frente al aparente culpable, pero que no veremos hasta cierto momento.
En esta presentación de los personajes, conocemos un poco a cada uno, sus vidas y problemas. Es un vistazo rápido, no se profundiza mucho en algunos de los personajes, pero eso no es lo importante de la película. Se nos pone rápidamente en el contexto del estilo de vida de cada uno. Así entramos en el juego de intentar adivinar cuál de ellos es el culpable. Tiene que ser uno de ellos, ¿no?
The filmmaker slowly reveals the cards. Something horrible has happened inside the bunker. The publisher, driven mad by the leak of the first pages of the book and the Hacker's threat to publish it, will push the limits of what is morally permissible and the group of translators will be kidnapped, harassed and mistreated until the culprit is discovered.
Who is behind the trap? Halfway through the film we are shown who the alleged perpetrator is and the biggest mystery begins to unfold: How the hell did he do it?
The bunker, built under a French mansion, has unbreakable security features. All electronic devices were confiscated before entering. They have no Internet access. They are guarded by a team of armed ex-Russian soldiers who make sure no one takes a single page out of the room where the nine translators do their work. How did this person first manage to leak a part of the book? Did he do it alone? Did he get help from someone on the outside? What is his motivation? Just money? Or is it personal?
In this part of the film the pace picks up to show us how it was possible for the pages of the book to be leaked. Many scenes may be implausible, but no matter, my intention was to enjoy the deranged way the screenwriters put the puzzle together. It is a film whose main motive is to entertain.
It respects and fulfills perfectly another factor that cannot be missing in this kind of movies. The script twists made to surprise us and give a general explanation of how everything happened and the motives, which go beyond the mere economic interest.
I had a good time watching the movie, in Hollywood many productions of this type are made and in literature there are also entertaining novels of the police or detective genre, known as whodunit. I like these stories to be interesting, convoluted, intriguing and I don't mind that some situations are a little exaggerated or not very credible. What I am interested in is having a good time and this French film is an excellent choice.
I see how many viewers swallow everything Hollywood makes without complaint, but when it is a film outside that circuit (in this case French) that handles the same elements of American cinema, they become too exquisite and demanding. Please.
Les Traducteurs is a good thriller where you have to solve a mystery, set in the literary world and with a splendid international cast. Not everyone has the same weight in the story and some characters are not deepened, but it must be understood that there are too many characters and the focus is first to discover the culprit and then to find out how he did it.
El cineasta va mostrando las cartas poco a poco. Algo horrible ha ocurrido dentro del búnker. El editor, enloquecido por la filtración de las primeras páginas del libro y la amenaza del Hacker de publicarlo , sobrepasará los límites de lo moralmente permisible y el grupo de traductores será secuestrado, acosado y maltratado hasta descubrir al culpable.
¿Quién está detrás de la trampa? A mitad de la película se nos muestra quién es el supuesto responsable y comienza a desvelarse el mayor misterio ¿Cómo diablos lo hizo?
El búnker, construido bajo una mansión francesa, cuenta con elementos de seguridad irrompibles. Todos los dispositivos electrónicos fueron confiscados antes de entrar. No tienen acceso a Internet. Están custodiados por un equipo de ex soldados rusos armados que se aseguran de que nadie saque una sola hoja de la sala donde los nueve traductores hacen su trabajo. ¿Cómo consiguió esta persona filtrar primero una parte del libro? ¿Lo hizo solo? ¿Recibió ayuda de alguien de fuera? ¿Cuál es su motivación? ¿Sólo el dinero? ¿O es personal?
En esta parte de la película el ritmo se acelera para mostrarnos cómo fue posible que se filtraran las páginas del libro. Muchas escenas pueden resultar inverosímiles, pero no importa, mi intención era disfrutar de la forma desquiciada en que los guionistas armaron el rompecabezas. Es una película cuyo motivo principal es entretener.
Respeta y cumple perfectamente con otro factor que no puede faltar en este tipo de películas. Los giros de guión realizados para sorprendernos y dar una explicación general de cómo sucedió todo y los motivos, que van más allá del mero interés económico.
Pasé un buen rato viendo la película, en Hollywood se hacen muchas producciones de este tipo y en la literatura también hay novelas entretenidas del género policial o detectivesco, conocido como whodunit. Me gustan de estas historias, que sean interesante, enrevesada, intrigante y no me importa que algunas situaciones sean un poco exageradas o poco creíbles. Lo que me interesa es pasar un buen rato y esta película francesa es una excelente opción.
Veo como muchos espectadores se tragan todo lo que hace Hollywood sin rechistar, pero cuando es es una película fuera de ese circuito (en este caso francesa) que maneja los mismos elementos del cine americano, se vuelven demasiado exquisitos y exigentes. Por favor.
Les Traducteurs es un buen thriller donde hay que resolver un misterio, ambientado en el mundo literario y con un espléndido reparto internacional. No todos tienen el mismo peso en la historia y no se profundiza en algunos personajes, pero hay que entender que hay demasiados personajes y el foco de atención es primero descubrir al culpable y luego averiguar cómo lo hizo.
An attractive cast with actors of different nationalities, playing the group of translators. Which of them is the culprit?
British actor Alex Lawther plays Alex Goodman, the one in charge of translating the novel into English. He is the youngest of them all, scruffy-looking, a fervent admirer of Dedalus' novels and wants to know the identity of the writer Oscar Brach. He demands it from the publisher, but the latter does not seem to want to reveal the identity of the writer, who has remained anonymous during all these years of success. Will this young wimp have something to do with the leak?
Italian Riccardo Scamarcio plays Dario Farelli. A character who will feel desperate when the leak occurs, as he wants to do his job and collect his money. He is a selfish character who only thinks of his own interests and will doubt all his co-workers. Is it all a farce and is he responsible for everything?
The beautiful Olga Kurylenko plays Russian translator Katerina Anisinova. She is also a fan of Dedalus, knows the whole story from the previous books and is so obsessed that she thinks she is Rebecca, one of the characters in the novel. She and Alex will become friends, although both will doubt each other. Katerina seems to be really crazy about this novel - will she be the criminal mind that leaks the pages of the new book?
The excellent Danish actress Sidse Babett Knudsen plays Helene Tuxen. She is married and has two children. She has worked as a translator on many occasions, but deep down she wants to write her own book and be known, to be successful. Behind her happiness lies a life full of frustrations. Is it her revenge for not being taken seriously?
Manolis Mavromatakis plays Konstantinos Kedrinos, the Greek translator. He is the most senior of the whole group and openly homosexual. He always seems to go unnoticed. Perhaps behind that good-natured face lies the culprit of the disaster. Can we trust him?
Actor Frédéric Chau plays the Chinese translator Chen Yao. Handsome, athletic, pretentious. He is an egocentric writer. I think he has a good chance of being the hacker. What do you think? You have to see the movie, I'm not going to do spoilers.
Maria Leite plays Telma Alves, in charge of translating the book into Portuguese, and Anna Maria Sturm plays the German Ingrid Korbel. Both women are of different ages, but not to be trusted. The German seems to be a bit crazy and Telma is not very normal either. Will they work together?

Les Traducteurs is an entertaining film that you can enjoy next weekend. It is perfect for those who like stories where you have to solve a mystery, because as viewers we start to draw conclusions when we see the behavior of the characters, for a moment we think it is a certain character, but then there is another one that seems more suspicious.
I wondered how did he do it? I wanted to know how the person responsible was able to get part of the book out in the midst of so many security measures. The answer was ingenious, an interesting plot twist that left me satisfied. Some people are not who they say they are and hide an incredible secret.

Les Traducteurs es una película entretenida que podrá disfrutar el próximo fin de semana. Es perfecta para los que les gustan las historias en las que hay que resolver un misterio, porque como espectadores empezamos a sacar conclusiones cuando vemos el comportamiento de los personajes, por un momento pensamos que es un determinado personaje, pero luego hay otro que parece más sospechoso.
Me preguntaba ¿cómo lo hizo? Quería saber cómo el responsable pudo sacar parte del libro en medio de tantas medidas de seguridad. La respuesta fue ingeniosa, un interesante giro argumental que me dejó satisfecho. Algunas personas no son quienes dicen ser y esconden un secreto increíble.
